I gave a trial for the Indian cricket team 30 to 40 times, but no one was selected. No name came anywhere. Very frustrated and left cricket. Finally graduated in architecture and joined the job. But one day the father called and said that I am leaving the job and now I will play cricket again.
Varun Chakraborty, one of the heroes of India’s victory in the Champions Trophy, told this in an interview by Akash Chopra.
Varun started playing cricket at one time and started working. Varun did not give up even after batting first, then fast bowling, finally wicket keeping. Leaving a good salary job, he started playing cricket again at the age of 26 and finally made it to the team.
The cricketing journey of Varun, known as Mystery Spinner, started from a school in Chennai. Wanted to become a fast bowler in school cricket. But due to lack of a place in the team, he had to become a wicketkeeper.
Varun played a total of 3 matches in the Champion Trophy 2025. During this, he took a total of 9 wickets at an average of 4.53. He became the second highest wicket of the tournament. He was excluded from playing 11 in the first two matches.
2018-19 played for Tamil Nadu in Vijay Hazare Trophy
In the year 2017-18, Varun performed well in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) after his return to cricket and attracted everyone’s attention with his bowling. His unique ‘mystery spin’ method of bowling soon came into the limelight. After this, he shocked everyone with 22 wickets in 9 matches while playing for Tamil Nadu in the 2018-19 Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Varun bowls spin bowling and right -hand batting with right hand. They are able to bowl many types of spin such as Googly, Carrom Ball and leg break.

Senior sports journalist Vimal Kumar says, ‘At the age of 26, the boy thinks that I have cricket to play. After this comes in IPL. He felt that he would never play international cricket. Actually, he had never played competition cricket.
He practiced after watching the video on YouTube and selected for the Kolkata team’s nets in 2018. Then joined the team as a mystery spinner. He was later selected in the 2021 T20 World Cup.
However, despite the selection in the World Cup, the Kolkata team made him sit on the bench in 2022. Then Varun called the coach of the KKR team and said that in 2018, when I was a net bowler, some of his photographs were needed. I have to see how I bowled at that time.
Varun saw his photos, saw action and analyzed the photos. Then he disgusted that now I have to become the batter version of Varun Chakraborty.
He returned to the Indian team during the England series in 2025. However, it was not sure that they would be selected in the Champion Trophy. But in whatever opportunity he got, he impressed the team’s captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir and bowling coach Ajit Agarkar.
He impressed the three that Varun was included in the team in the champion trophy by excluding the team’s finest opener batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal.
IPL became the first spinner to take 5 wickets for KKR in 2020.

2019 – Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings 11)
- In view of Varun Chakraborty’s brilliant domestic performance, Kings XI Punjab bought him for Rs 8.4 crore in the 2019 IPL auction. However, he did not get much opportunities and due to injury he was able to play only 1 match throughout the season.
2020 – Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
- In the 2020 IPL, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bought Varun for Rs 4 crore. This season he performed brilliantly and became the first ‘mystery spinner’ to take 5 wickets against Delhi Capitals in Abu Dhabi. He took 17 wickets throughout the tournament and became KKR’s prominent bowler.
2021 – Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
- In the 2021 IPL, Varun once again bowled brilliantly and took 18 wickets in 16 matches. His brilliant bowling helped KKR reach the final.
Debut in T20 International Cricket in 2021
- The Indian team was selected in 2021 due to Varun Chakraborty’s consistent performance. He made a T20 debut against Sri Lanka on 25 July 2021. In this match, he conceded 28 runs with 1 wicket. He was also a part of the Indian team in the T20 World Cup 2021, although his performance there was not very effective there.

In 2014, Varun acted in the Tamil film Jeeva. This film was the story of a cricketer who failed completely.
