77 -year -old Banu Mushtaq and Translator Deepa Bhatshi have been awarded the International Books Prize 2025 for their book ‘Heart Lamp’ on Tuesday.

With the award, he has not only won a prize money of 50,000 euros but has also created history. This is the first time this award was given to a book written in an original Kannada.

For the first time, the collection of short stories has received this award and this is the first time an Indian translator has received Booker honors for translation. Earlier in 2022, Gitanjali Shri received this award for ‘Tomb of Sand’.

The story of Muslim women tells ‘heart lamp’

‘Heart Lamp’ Advocate and activist Banu Mushtaq has a collection of 12 short stories written between 1990 and 2023. It has stories of everyday life of Muslim women. Through these stories, she talks about patriarchal thinking, religious restrictions and gender discrimination.

Mushtaq also describes the suffocation of most of the women of the country through her stories that she feels inside her house.

Inspiration during advocacy

Mushtaq says that he got the inspiration to write these stories from the days of his advocacy. When she was practicing, many women used to come to her with their home problems and cases. Banu Mushtaq was born in 1948 in Hassan, Karnataka.

He did his initial education from a missionary school in Kannada language. After this, she also went to the university fighting the society. At the age of 26, he married. Apart from Kannada, he is a good knowledge of Hindi, Urdu and English language.

Banned family for raising voice for women

Banu Mushtaq has worked as a reporter in Lankesh Patrika. Apart from this, she has also worked in All India Radio in Bangalore. She became a mother at the age of 29. After this, he started writing during postpartum depression. In 1999, he has been awarded the Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award.

Since the 1980, she has been raising her voice through activism. In the year 2000, his family was excluded by the society. Mushtaq’s activism was the reason for this. She was demanding permission for Muslim women to enter the mosque. She is in favor of wearing Muslim children wearing hijab in schools.

Credit of success is grandmother- Deepa

Deepa Bhashti, who translated ‘Heart Lamp’ in English, says that her grandmother got her fond of books and stories. Grandma is heard 3-4 stories throughout the day. Sometimes she acting like the characters of the stories, sometimes she changed her voice and won many characters together.

Deepa says that even today when I think about grandmother, I am surprised. Because of them, today I am able to write and translate stories.
