1. Ratapani Sanctuary becomes the 9th Tiger Reserve of MP: Ratapani Sanctuary adjacent to Bhopal will be the 9th tiger reserve of Madhya Pradesh. The state government issued its notification on December 2. Earlier on December 1, the Central Government had declared Shivpuri’s Madhav National Park as the 8th Tiger Reserve of the state. In this way, Madhya Pradesh has got two new tiger reserves in two days.
The number of tiger reserves in Madhya Pradesh has now increased from 7 to 9.
- The core area of Ratapani Tiger Reserve will be 763.812 square kilometers, while the buffer area is 507.653 square kilometers. Thus, the total area of the Tiger Reserve will be 1271.465 square kilometers.
- This area falls in Raisen and Sehore districts of Madhya Pradesh.
- Before declaring Ratapani and Madhav National Park as tiger reserves, there were 7 tiger reserves in Madhya Pradesh. These tiger reserves are Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Panna, Satpura, Sanjay Dubri, Nauradehi.
- Madhya Pradesh has got the status of Tiger State.
- According to the census of the year 2022, there are 785 tigers here. In the year 2018 this number was 526.

2. ‘Brain rot’ becomes the word of the year of 2024: Oxford University has chosen the word that describes the habit of mindlessly scrolling for hours on social media platforms as the ‘Word of the Year’ of 2024. This is called ‘Brain Rot’. This term refers to the negative impact on the brain due to continuous viewing of content on social media.
The use of the term ‘brain rot’ has increased by 230% between 2023 and 2024.
- Caspar Grathwohl, President of Oxford Languages, said that this word shows the dangers of virtual life. Accepting it as the Word of the Year presents the correct picture of the current times.
- The term brain rot was used by Henry David Thoreau in his book Walden in 1854, before the advent of the Internet. He questioned the habit of the society which gives less importance to complex ideas. He wrote, ‘England is trying to save potatoes from rot, but why is no effort being made to cure brain rot?’
- The term first became popular on social media among Gen G (born 1997–2012) and Gen Alpha (born after 2013).
- Gen G grew up with the Internet, while Gen Alpha is growing up in a completely digital environment. The deep influence of social media and digital habits is visible among these generations.
- Apart from brain rot, five more words were also shortlisted – demure, dynamic pricing, lore, romanticism, and slop.
- Demure – A person who behaves calmly, simply and restrained.
- Dynamic Pricing – The increase of the price of a good or service as market demand increases.
- Lore – A collection of information, facts, and stories related to a person or topic, used for better understanding of that person or subject.
- Romance – Stories that combine romance and fantasy, featuring a love story with magic, supernatural events, and adventure.
- Slop – content shared randomly on the Internet, usually generated through AI and considered useless or unverifiable.

3. India is hosting the Asian Women’s Handball Championship for the first time: The 20th Asian Women’s Handball Championship has started from today i.e. 3rd December in New Delhi. The Indian team will face Hong Kong in its first match. India is hosting this tournament for the first time.
The 25-member team captained by Deeksha Kumari will play matches against the top teams of Asia.
- The top 8 Asian teams participate in the Asian Women’s Handball Championship. The teams have been divided into two groups.
- Group A consists of Kazakhstan, South Korea, China and Singapore. At the same time, India has been placed in Group B along with teams like Japan, Iran and Hong Kong.
- India will play its first match against Hong Kong on December 3 at the Indira Gandhi Arena. After this, it will face Iran on 4th December and then Japan on 6th December.
- The top two teams from each group will make it to the semi-finals.
- The top 4 teams of the tournament will get a place in the 2025 World Women’s Handball Championship.
- The Indian team has undergone rigorous training at the National Center of Excellence in Gujarat under the guidance of coach Sachin Chaudhary for the championship.
- The team includes excellent players like Manika. Bhavana Sharma and Priyanka Thakur of India’s Asian Women’s Junior Championship 2022 gold-winning team are also included in the team.

4. India-Malaysia joint military exercise ‘Harimau Shakti’ begins: The fourth edition of joint military exercise ‘Harimau Shakti’ between India and Malaysia began on 2 December. Its organization started in Bentong Camp in Pahang district of Malaysia. This exercise will continue till December 15, 2024.
This war exercise has been named Harimau Shakti-2024.
- The Indian contingent of 78 soldiers is being represented by a battalion of the Mahar Regiment in this military exercise.
- At the same time, the Malaysian contingent of 123 soldiers is being represented by the Royal Malaysian Regiment.
- Joint Exercise Harimau Shakti is an annual training program held alternately between India and Malaysia.
- The previous edition was held in Umroi Cantt, Meghalaya in November 2023.
- The 5th Royal Battalion of the Malaysian Army and the battalion of Rajput Regiment of India took part in it.

5. Belgium becomes the first country to provide maternity leave, pension, health insurance to sex workers: Belgium has become the first country in the world where Belgian sex workers will also be able to take maternity leave. A new law has come into effect in the country from December 1, in which sex workers will have the right to sick leave, health insurance and pension.
Belgium had decriminalized sex work in the year 2022.
- Belgian MPs had voted for these rights of sex workers in the month of May itself. This includes giving them protection like other employed people.
- In the new law, sex workers have been given legal protection in many cases.
- They will be officially given employment contracts.
- This is being seen as an effort to stop abuses and exploitation against sex workers.
- Under the new law, sex workers will have the right to refuse sexual partners or have limited sexual activity.
- Also, she will be able to stop the sexual act at any time during intercourse. They will not be fired from work for these reasons.
- Apart from this, there will be panic buttons at the places where sex workers work. According to the law, clean sheets, water and contraceptive items will be required there.

History of 3 December: On this day in 1984, the Bhopal gas tragedy occurred. At 8:30 pm on 2nd December, the air of Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, was becoming poisonous. As night fell and the 3rd approached, this wind became deadly. The reason was the leaking of methyl isocyanate gas from the Union Carbide factory. The reason for the gas leak was the mixing of poisonous methyl isocyanate gas with water in tank number 610. This created pressure in the tank and it opened. The gas released from it took thousands of lives. Lakhs were made disabled, the consequences of which are visible even today. The main accused in this accident was Warren Anderson, who was the CEO of this company. Anderson was also arrested on 6 December 1984, but the next day on 7 December, he was sent to Delhi by a government plane and from there he went to America. After this Anderson never returned to India. The court had declared him absconding. Anderson died at the age of 93 on September 29, 2014, in Vero Beach, Florida.
