Paralympic discus thrower Yogesh Kathuniya, who won two silver medals in Tokyo and Paris Paralympic Games, may receive the Khel Ratna Award. Delhi High Court has asked the selection committee of the Central Government to reconsider the name of Kathuniya. The High Court has intervened in this matter after Kathunia’s petition. The court acknowledged that despite the silver medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and other achievements, Kathuniya was left out of the 2024 Khel Ratna Award. Kathuniya’s petition was heard under the chairmanship of Justice Sachin Dutta. The panel also raised questions on the selection process. Advocate Nitin Yadav, appearing for Kathuniya, argued that despite having the highest number of points for Khel Ratna under the rules, he was ignored. He requested the court to make it mandatory for the panel committee to consider Kathuniya’s name in view of his achievements, after which the court ordered the selection committee to consider his name.
