Thousands of parents gathered at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Saturday. These parents are demonstrating over DPS Dwarka’s decisions to increase fees and discriminatory attitude with students. It is alleged that the children of parents who did not pay increased fees were discriminated against in the school.
Schools and parents are accusing each other
In May, the Delhi High Court ordered 102 students to admit back to the school. Along with this, parents were asked to deposit 50% of the increased fees. However, the parents protesting on Saturday have alleged that the school has not followed the court order.
At the same time, people associated with DPS Dwarka say that students will be withdrawn in school after depositing 50% of the increased fees. A school official said, “Parents have been asked to pay the fees as per the court order.”
Parents, on the other hand, are alleging that the school is still harassing them. A parent said, ‘The school is not following the court order. He is also not refunding the extra amount. The school is demanding more than the High Court order.
Parents of 20 private schools came in support
Apart from the students of DPS Dwarka, parents from other 20 private schools in Delhi also participated in the demonstration. They say that if a school can increase fees by violating the rules and the administration does not take any action against it, then the rest of the schools can do the same by looking at it. Parents of many schools participated in the performance.
What is the whole matter?
This dispute over increasing fees started on 9 May 2025. The DPS Dwarka School had cut the names of 32 children for not paying the increased fees. It is alleged that when these children reached school on 13 May, 4 mails and two female bouncers checked their ID and they were sent back.
After this, on 15 May 2025, 102 parents filed a petition in the Delhi High Court. In this, the school had demanded to be taken under the control of the Delhi government and the Lieutenant Governor (LG).
On 16 May 2025, Justice Vikas Mahajan, while hearing the case, asked the school how 32 children were evacuated without notice.
The court said that the school has violated Section 35 (4) of the Delhi School Education Act, 1973 in which it is necessary to give notice to the parents before the expulsion.
The court sought evidence of notice from the school counsel but the school could not provide any evidence. On 20 May 2025, Justice Sachin Dutta also sought evidence of notice from school lawyer Puneet Mittal but the school could not present any evidence again.
The court termed the expulsion of the children as ‘Sadistic’ and ‘inhuman’. The court reserved the verdict and said to have the next hearing in the case on 5 June.
Delhi government notice on increasing fees for 11 schools
After the case of increasing fees in DPS, the Delhi government had audited schools. On 17 April 2025, a show cause notice was issued to 11 schools in Delhi for not submitting audit reports for the last 10 years and an illegal increase in fees. These include DPS Dwarka.
These schools are accused of increasing fees for 2024-25 session. This fee was increased without the approval of DoE. Parents allege that the Delhi government’s action is slow. There are 1,677 recognized private schools in Delhi, with just 600 audit.
Education Minister said- ‘zero tolerance’ for private schools
Speaking to the media, Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood said that the government will adopt the policy of ‘zero tolerance’ on the irregularities of private schools. He claimed that the annual audit of 75 schools took place during the time of AAP, but the BJP government has taken action faster than this.
At the same time, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that his government is against ‘education mafia’ and will protect the interests of children. On the other hand, the Aam Aadmi Party sitting in the opposition has accused the BJP of promoting “education mafia”.
Former Education Minister Atishi has written a letter to the Chief Minister demanding appointment of CAG-registered auditor for the audit of schools and banning the recovery of fees.
