Infosys founder Narayana Murthy has once again advocated working for 14 hours a day. Speaking at a summit, he said that the people of the country should change their attitude towards work. He mentioned his own grueling schedule. It also said that PM Modi is working 100 hours a week. The citizens of the country should also dedicate like him. After this, once again the debate has started regarding India’s work culture.

Narayana Murthy said 4 things in favor of increasing working hours-

  • I worked 6 and a half days a week, 14 hours a day. I was disappointed in the change in 1986 from a 6 working-day week to a 5 working-day week.
  • If we want India to progress globally then Indians must be ready to work hard.
  • Even the most intelligent people cannot succeed without continuous efforts.
  • When PM Modi is working 100 hours a week then the citizens of the country should give equal dedication to him by working for extra hours to take India’s progress forward.

8 out of 10 employers in India in favor of ‘right to disconnect’ policy at workplace

Narayana Murthy talks about increasing working hours in a week and not giving priority to work-life balance for the progress of the country. However, data shows that 88% of Indians remain in constant touch with their office in some way or the other, even after office hours. Global job matching and hiring platform Indeed had conducted a survey from July to September 2024. Those who advocate increasing working hours should take note of its 4 conclusions:

  • 85% of the employees said that even if they are on leave due to illness or at home on public holidays, they still maintain communication with the office.
  • 79% of employees feel that they can be punished for not being present even after working hours.
  • 81% of employers feel that if they do not maintain a separation between social life and work life, they will lose skilled employees. 8 out of every 10 employers are in favor of implementing ‘right to disconnect’ policy at the workplace.

This policy means that after the stipulated working hours, the employee should have the freedom to completely stay away from his office work or any other kind of communication.

Work-life balance is important not only for employee’s health but also for good work.

This time Narayana Murthy has given a statement on working hours at a time when fear of ‘Karoshi’ is being raised in the country. Karoshi- means death while working. This is a Japanese word, which came into use when it became common for people to die while working in Japan. America’s National Library of Medicine has published a research on the results of several studies. According to this, working for long hours can cause BP, diabetes and heart diseases. Apart from these, a person’s sleep and mental health are affected.

However, people working in corporates have now considered working outside working hours as normal. Whereas in many studies it has also been found that long working hours have a negative impact on productivity. If employees are made to feel good at the workplace, they are able to perform better.

  • Their chances of working in the same organization increase 3 times.
  • They put in 2 times more effort to complete the given work.
  • It takes 3 times more effort to adopt changes made for the betterment of the organization.
