The 18th season of IPL is going to start from 22 March. The opening match will be played in Kolkata between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Both teams are part of the tournament from the first season of IPL played in 2008.
This time 10 teams will participate, but there are 5 teams in 18 years of IPL history, which are no longer part of the tournament. Sachin Tendulkar has also scored his only T20 century against one of them. At the same time, a team disappeared from the tournament despite becoming a champion.
Story of 5 teams who have disappeared from IPL …
1. Kochi Tuskers Kerala
Sachin’s century came against KTK
Rondevu Sports World Company bought the Kochi team in 2010 for Rs 1555 crore. In the 2011 season, the teams were increased from 8 to 10. Kochi was the 9th team of the tournament. Under the captaincy of Mahela Jayawardene, the team had star players like Brendon McCullum, Ravindra Jadeja, Muttiah Muralitharan, RP Singh and Sreesanth. Despite this, the team could win only 6 out of 14 matches and could not reach the playoffs at number 8 in the points table.
Kochi played the same season, but the God of Cricket Sachin Tendulkar scored the only century of his T20 career against him. On 15 April 2011, Mumbai Indians scored 182 runs with Sachin’s century at Wankhede Stadium. However, this score was not enough to win the team, Kochi achieved target by losing only 2 wickets in 19 overs. McCullum scored the match winning 81 runs.
Why disappeared?
The franchise owners could not renew the bank guarantee of BCCI. By 26 March 2011, the owner was to submit to Garati Bank. The board waited for about 6 months, but did not get 156 crore rupees of the contract. Due to which BCCI terminated the team in the annual meeting on 19 September 2011. All the players of the team were launched in the auction, so that they would not be damaged.
KTK Chairman Mukesh Patel had said that BCCI has nothing dues on the franchise. At the same time, BCCI alleged that the franchise did not pay the board 156 crore rupees. In July 2015, Justice RC Lahoti ruled in favor of the franchise. The court ordered that BCCI will give Rs 550 crore to the team as a compensation. The franchise demanded a return to the IPL in lieu of compensation, but the BCCI did not give the team an entry again.
2. Pune Warriors India
Chris Gayle’s stormy century
Sahara India bought the Pune -based franchise in 2010 for around Rs 1700 crore. Pune Warriors India was the 10th team to join the 2011 IPL. Players like Yuvraj Singh, Sourav Ganguly and Aran Finch captained the team. Players like Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey, Steve Smith, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ashish Nehra were part of Pune. Despite this, the team could win only 26% of the matches in 3 seasons. The team remained at number 8 or 9 every time.
PWI could not do any special feat in the tournament, but a record was definitely made against him. On 23 April 2013, the team matches RCB in Bengaluru. In the match, RCB opener Chris Gayle scored a century on just 30 balls. He scored 175 runs off 66 balls, hitting 13 fours and 17 sixes. In T20 history till date, no player has scored a bigger score than GAIL. RCB scored 263 runs in 20 overs, which was also the highest score of IPL for 10 years.
Why disappeared?
Pune franchise owner Subrata Roy could not renew the bank guarantee of Rs 170.2 crore in 2013. Its deadline was May 2, BCCI waited till May 20 and then transferred the last guarantee money to his account. After this move by BCCI, Subrata Roy withdrew his team’s name from IPL. On 26 October, BCCI also terminated Pune Warriors.
Subrata had said, “When he bought the team in 2010, BCCI had signed a contract for every season 18 league matches, but only 14-16 matches were fed to the team in 3 seasons. Kochi also opposed this. The BCCI is reducing the matches of the teams and now instead of providing compensation, the bank is transferring the guarantee to its account. Being a professional board, it is wrong, so there is no use to remain a part of the tournament. After this, Sahara also did not renew the sponsorship of Team India.
3. Deccan Chargers
The title won the second year, 3 season flops
Deccan Chronicle Holdings Limited (DHCL) bought the Deccan Chargers franchise for Rs 1000 crore. The team was part of the tournament from the first season in 2008. The team played 5 seasons under the captaincy of Adam Gilchrist and Kumar Sangakkara. Players like Dale Steyn, Rohit Sharma, Symonds, Herschelle Gibbs, Pragyan Ojha and Shahid Afridi were part of the team. Despite this, the team could win only 38% matches.
Deccan’s best season came in 2009, when the tournament was played in South Africa. The team then finished fourth and made it to the semi -finals. Under the captaincy of Gilchrist, the team won the title by defeating Delhi semi -finals and Bangalore to Bangalore. The team also made it to the 2010 semi -finals, but lost to Chennai. Apart from these 2 seasons, the team remained at number 7 or 8th every time.
Why disappeared?
In June 2012, reports came out that DHCL is selling its franchise. By August, the team could not even pay salary to some of their players. BCCI gave him the warning to give salary as soon as possible. The debt -ridden franchise offered to sell the team to the team in September after approval from BCCI.
On 14 September, BCCI terminated the franchise. The board said that the franchisees are unable to pay their players’ salary, the debt related to the tournament is also increasing. The team could not renew a bank guarantee of Rs 100 crore. The franchise reached the High Court, seeking time till October to repay the loan.
On 12 October 2012, BCCI officially terminated Deccan Chargers. The tender was also issued to buy the team on 14 October. On 25 October, Sun TV Network Limited bought Hyderabad franchise for 5 years for Rs 425 crore. The team was named Sunrisers Hyderabad. Players of Deccan Chargers became part of the Sunrisers team in 2013.
In July 2020, the DHCL Group won the court case against BCCI. The court ordered that the board would have to give a compensation of Rs 4814 crore to the DHCL Group. BCCI reached the Supreme Court. In June 2021, it was decided that the franchise is entitled to a compensation of Rs 36 crore. However, this could not open the way for Deccan Chargers to return to IPL.
4. Gujarat Lions
Points table topped in the first season
In 2016, Keshav Bansal, owner of Intest Technology, bought Gujarat Lions. Rajkot based franchise played both seasons under the captaincy of Suresh Raina. Gujarat retained players like Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Smith, McCullum and Dwayne Bravo. The team also had star players like Ishaan Kishan, Dinesh Karthik, Aran Finch.
Gujarat topped the points table in the first season. The team won 9 matches, but lost 2 matches of the playoffs. Gujarat lost to Bengaluru in Qualifier-1 and Hyderabad in Qualifier-2. In the second and last season, the team could win only 4 matches and remained at number 7 in the points table.
Why disappeared?
Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were banned for 2 seasons after being caught in the match fixing scandal in 2016. The IPL gave 2 new teams a chance instead. One of these was Gujarat Lions. Chennai and Rajasthan returned in 2018, which ended the journey of Lions. In 2022, the Gujarat -based franchise entered the IPL, but it was owned by CVC Capitals. For this reason, the team was named Gujarat Titans.
5. Rising Pune Supergiyats
The difference of 1 run did not allow to become champions
In 2016, Sanjeev Goenka of RPSG Group bought the Pune based franchise. He named the team Rising Pune Supergiants. The first season team landed under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. Players like Ajinkya Rahane, Faf du Plessis, Ben Stokes, Steve Smith, Kevin Peterson, Ravi Ashwin were part of the team. Despite this, the team could win only 5 out of 14 matches of the first season and ranked 7th in 8 teams. The next season Smith captained and brought the team to the playoffs. The team defeated Mumbai Indians by 20 runs in qualifier-1 and made it to the finals.
Pune again got Mumbai in the final. The team stopped MI at 129. After 19 overs, Pune’s score was 119/3. 13 runs were required from 6 balls, Mitchell Johnson landed for bowling. He conceded 9 runs off 5 balls. Need 4 runs on the last ball, Daniel Christian played the shot, but the fielder on the square leg diverted the ball inside the boundary. Fielder throwed the ball, Christian was runout in the third run attempt. Despite being very close to the victory, RPSG missed the opportunity to become champions by a margin of 1 run.
Why disappeared?
Like Gujarat Lions, Rising Pune Supergiants were also made part of the IPL for 2 season. The team replaced one of the franchisees from CSK and RR. So RPSG’s journey stopped as soon as both returned in 2018. However, franchise owner Sanjeev Goenka bought the Lucknow -based IPL team in 2022. He named the team as Lucknow Supergiants. This team also could not win the title.
