India has launched its campaign with a gold medal in the ongoing World Archery Championship in Gwangju city of South Korea. The Indian team of Rishabh Yadav, Aman Saini and Prathamesh Fajy defeated the French team 235-233 in the final of the men’s compound category on Sunday.

This is the first time India has won the gold of the men’s compound team event in this tournament. This is also India’s first gold in this season of the tournament. In the first three sets of the match, the two teams were at a stand of 176–176, but in the fourth set, India scored 59 points, which put pressure on France. France could score only 57 points in this set and thus India won the gold medal with a margin of two points.

Great return to semi-finals, Turkey defeated 234-232

The Indian men’s team made a great comeback against Turkey in the semi -finals. Despite a bad shot of 7 points in the first set, the team did not give up and lost only one point in the next three sets. India defeated Turkey 234-232 to advance to the finals by scoring 120 points in the last two sets. In the quarter-finals, India also defeated Australia in a shoot-off and eight-time World Champion America by a margin of one point to claim their strong claim.

Silver medal in mixed team The mixed compound team won the silver medal. In which Rishabh Yadav and Jyoti Surekha Vennam collided with the Netherlands. The Indian pair took the lead in the first set, but the Netherlands took the lead due to scoring only 37 points in the second set. In the next three sets, the Netherlands maintained their grip and India had to be content with the silver medal.

Women’s team disappointed On the other hand, the current champion Indian women’s compound team (Jyoti Surekha Vennam, Parneet Kaur and Preetika Pradeep) lost 229–233 against Italy in Round of 16. A low score of 56-56 points in the first two sets put India in trouble and Italy easily won.

This is the first time in a decade when the Indian women’s compound team was out of the tournament without any medal. In the last four editions, this team won four medals including one gold, two silver and bronze.
