The impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Verma was approved on Tuesday, August 12 in the Lok Sabha in the cash scandal case. Speaker Om Birla said, “I have received a proposal with a total signature of 146 members, including Ravi Shankar Prasad and the Leader of the Opposition.”
In fact, on March 14, while being a judge of the Delhi High Court, Justice Yashwant Verma’s house was allegedly received in large quantities. The committee of 3 judges found the allegations to be correct and convicted them to investigate the case. Due to this, on May 8, CJI had written a letter to the Prime Minister and the President recommended the impeachment motion.
Justice Verma comes from a legal family. His father is the late Justice A.N. Verma was a judge of the Allahabad High Court. His uncle is the late S.N. Verma was a famous lawyer.
Before becoming an additional judge from the year 2006 to October 2014, Justice Verma fought cases of cases related to Constitutional, Labor and Industrial, Corporate Law and Taxation while being a lawyer in the Allahabad High Court. Justice Verma was a special advocate in the Allahabad High Court. Meanwhile, he took over as Chief Standing Council of Uttar Pradesh, the Chief Permanent Advocate of the state from 2012 to August 2013.
Permanent judge became after one and a half years
On 13 October 2014, he took oath as a permanent judge on 1 February 2016, almost one and a half years after becoming an additional judge in the Allahabad High Court. While in this post, he presided over several cases including Constitutional Law, Taxation, Arbitration and Criminal.
Was the second most senior judge of Delhi High Court
He was sworn in as a judge of the Delhi High Court on October 11, 2021, 7 years after becoming a judge in the Allahabad High Court. He was the second most senior judge after Chief Justice. If they were not returned back to the Allahabad High Court, then the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court would also be made.
A large amount of cash was found at the house
In fact, on 14 March, there was a fire in the residence of Delhi High Court in Delhi on 14 March (then he was a judge of Delhi High Court). The Delhi Fire Service (DSF) team arrived and the fire was controlled. A large amount of cash was allegedly found in the store room of the housing.
At the same time, Justice Yashwant Verma claims that he or his family never kept cash in the store room. A conspiracy is being hatched against him.
SC collegium sent back to Allahabad High Court
On March 22, after the proposal by the Supreme Court Collegium, Justice Verma was removed from Delhi and sent back to Allahabad High Court. However, the Allahabad High Court Bar Association has objected to the decision.
In addition, Supreme Court Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna formed a committee of 3 judges to investigate the case. Also, it was decided that Justice Yashwant Verma should not be entrusted with any judicial responsibility for some time.
CJI recommended impeachment motion by writing letters
On May 3, the inquiry committee submitted a report to the Supreme Court. In this, the allegations against Justice Yashwant Verma were found correct and convicted. After this, on May 8, CJI wrote a letter to the PM and the President recommended the impeachment motion. Then, today i.e. on August 12, Speaker Om Birla approved the impeachment motion in the Lok Sabha.
