After heavy protests, the Maharashtra government has made some changes in the decision to use Hindi as a third language in primary schools. On Tuesday, the State School Education Department has released updated guidelines regarding this.
Can choose different languages from Hindi
According to updated guidelines, students studying from class 1 to 5 in Marathi and English Medium can choose other Indian languages besides Hindi as the third language.
For this, the condition will be that at least 20 students of one class should choose another language other than Hindi.
In such a situation, another language teacher will also be appointed in the school. If the number of students choosing second language is less than 20, then that language will be taught through online medium.
The notice issued by the government said, ‘According to the State Curriculum Framework of School Education 2024, Hindi will usually be taught as the third language in Marathi and English medium schools from class 1 to 5. However, if students want to read any other language, then they will have complete freedom. This decision has been taken so that along with following Karikulam, they can read the desired language of students.
Marathi Second Language in Non-Marathi Medium Schools
Revised Language Policy also states rules for non-marathi and non-English medium schools. According to this, students will now read three languages in schools. In this, it will be mandatory for Marathi to keep the language of medium of instruction. Apart from this, English language will also have to be taught.
Maharashtra became the first state to implement three language policy in April
In April, the Maharashtra government ruled to implement three language policy in all schools in the state. It was said in the announcement that Hindi in the state will be taught in schools as a third language. However, due to heavy protests, the state government withdrew this decision after 6 days.
Education Minister Dadaji Bhusus had said that Marathi will be mandatory, English will be optional and third language optional. Earlier, during a conversation with reporters, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also said that students will be able to choose a third language from their minds. Hindi will not be compulsory.
Plan to implement 5+3+3+4 model in Maharashtra
At the same time, NEP’s recommended 5+3+3+4 model in Maharashtra will be implemented according to the announcement made earlier. The first phase of this new structure will be applied to the new academic year i.e. 2025-26 to the first class.
The three language policy will also be implemented by phase-wise. From the coming academic year, students of the first class in the state will read three languages.
According to Karikulam’s new framework, Maharashtra State Board Text Books will be based on NCERT’s Curriculum. However, the local context of Maharashtra will be added to the books of Social Science and Languages. Accordingly, the text books of the first class will be published by Balbharati. Balbharati is the State Book Bureau of the State.
