Appointment
1. New Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand High Court appointed: On December 23, Justice GS Sandhawalia was appointed to the Himachal Pradesh High Court, while Justice Narendra G. Was appointed Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court. Justice Sandhawalia is currently the judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court, while Justice Narendra G. He is a judge of Andhra Pradesh High Court.

- The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the name of Justice Narendra ji on September 24. At the same time, on September 17, the collegium had recommended the name of Justice Sandhawalia.
- The post of Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court was vacant after the retirement of Justice Rajiv Shakdhar on October 18, now Justice Sandhawalia will replace him.
- Whereas, Narendra ji. Acting Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court will replace Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari.
- There is a fixed process to select judges of the High Court and the Supreme Court, which is called the Supreme Court Collegium. The most senior judges of the Supreme Court are included in it.
- The Center accepts its recommendations and appoints the new CJI and other judges.
- According to tradition, the most senior judge on the basis of experience in the Supreme Court becomes the Chief Justice.
- This process takes place under a memorandum, which is called MoP i.e. ‘Memorandum of Procedure for the Appointment of Supreme Court Judges’.
- MoP was prepared for the first time in the year 1999.
DEATH
2. Filmmaker Shyam Benegal passed away: Famous film director, writer and film producer Shyam Benegal passed away on 23 December. He breathed his last at 6:38 pm at Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central. Shyam was suffering from kidney disease for a long time. Two years ago, both his kidneys failed. Since then he was undergoing dialysis.
- Shyam Benegal holds the record for winning the most National Awards. He has been honored with this award for 8 films.
- Shyam Sundar Benegal was born on 14 December 1934 in Hyderabad in a Brahmin family. He majored in economics. Later started photography.
- He is also considered the father of art cinema in Bollywood.
- At the age of just 12, he met his photographer father Sridhar B. The first film was made on the camera given by Benegal.
- Shyam Benegal’s films gave great actors to Indian cinema, among which Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Amrish Puri, Anant Nag, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil and cinematographer Govind Nihalani are prominent.
- Apart from making documentaries on Jawaharlal Nehru and Satyajit Ray, he also directed the serials ‘Yatra’, ‘Katha Sagar’ and ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’ for Doordarshan.
- Shyam has made 24 films, 45 documentaries and 15 ad films.
- He directed dozens of excellent films like Zubaida, The Making of the Mahatma, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero, Mandi, Aarohan, Welcome to Sajjanpur.
- For his contribution to the film industry, he was awarded Padma Shri in 1976 and Padma Bhushan in 1991.
- Apart from this, he has 8 National Awards in his account. The record of winning the most National Awards is in Shyam’s name only.
- Benegal was also given the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the biggest honor of Indian cinema, in 2005.
- Shyam Benegal made his first film Ankur in 1974. In this film he raised the issues of farmers of Andhra Pradesh.
- Whereas, ‘Mujib – The Making of a Nation’ was his last film. This film was based on the life of Mujibur Rahman.

3. The country’s first digital museum built from the stones of Jaisalmer: India’s first digital museum has opened for visitors from all over the world. Located in the Parwadi area on the Mumbai-Pune highway, this museum took 12 years to complete and cost approximately Rs 400 crore.
Jaisalmer stones have been used in preparing this ‘Abhay Prabhavana’ museum.
- In the premises of this museum, there is a grand replica of Chittorgarh Fort made from Jaisalmer stones.
- This museum will introduce you to the history and philosophy of Jainism. Located on the banks of the Indrayani River and close to the 2200 year old Yellow Jain Caves, this museum is spread over 3.5 lakh square feet.
- Its 50 acres have 30 specially designed viewing galleries showcasing amazing craftsmanship, curated installations and Jain values.
- There are more than 350 artefacts, sculptures and replicas here. A thousand year old manuscript of Jainism has also been displayed in the gallery.

4. Full schedule of Champions Trophy 2024 released: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on December 24 released the complete schedule of the Champions Trophy 2025 to be hosted by Pakistan next year. The tournament to be held in the hybrid model will start from February 19 and continue till March 9. 15 matches will be played in 19 days. A reserve day has also been kept for the second semi-final and final.
The group match between India and Pakistan will be held in Dubai on 23 February.
- India will play all its matches in Dubai only, Bangladesh and New Zealand are also in the team’s group. A semi-final will also be played in Dubai itself. If India reaches the final then this match will also be held in Dubai. Whereas the remaining 10 matches of the tournament will be held in Pakistan.
- India is in Group-A. Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand are in the team’s group.
- The second group consists of Australia, England, South Africa and Afghanistan. There will be 2 semi-finals on 4th and 5th March, while the final will be played on 9th March.
- Teams of India and Pakistan will not play cricket in each other’s country.
- All India’s matches in the Champions Trophy 2025 will be played at neutral venues.
- Pakistani team will also not come to India for any tournament till 2027. Its matches will also be held at neutral venues.
- Pakistan is the defending champion of the tournament, the team won the title in 2017 by defeating India in the final.

5. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi launches ‘Jago Grahak Jaago App’: On the occasion of National Consumer Day, Union Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi launched Jago Grahak Jago App, Jagriti App and Jagriti Dashboard. Its objective is to identify dark patterns on e-commerce platforms and protect consumers.
National Consumer Day is celebrated every year on 24 December to highlight the importance of consumer activities in the country. This year’s theme is ‘Virtual Hearing and Digital Access to Consumer Justice’.
- ‘E-Map’ portal for all legal metrology services was also launched. This is a unified digital platform, the objective of which is to convert the legal metrology portals of all the states into a single national system.
- AI-enabled ‘National Consumer Helpline 2.0’ also launched.
- Bureau of Indian Standards will adopt smart standards from the year 2025. These standards will be interactive, intelligent and dynamic.
- Traditionally standards are written in word processing documents. These standards are easy to read but difficult for computers to understand. Smart standards have been developed to be easily understood by both humans and machines.

History of 24th December: On this day in 1924, Mohammed Rafi, one of the country’s greatest singers, was born. Rafi was born on 24 December 1924 in Punjab. Rafi was famous for his versatile singing talent and vocal range. Rafi sang all kinds of songs, from patriotic songs to extremely romantic, sad songs and qawwalis to ghazals and bhajans to classical songs. Mohammed Rafi received four Filmfare Awards and one National Award. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1976. In 2001, Stardust magazine chose Rafi as the ‘Best Singer of the Millennium’.
In 2013, Rafi was voted the best voice of Hindi cinema in a CNN-IBN poll.
