Female Teachers More Than Male Teachers In Private Schools UDISE 2023-24 Report | For the first time, women teachers in the country are more than men: Female teachers increased by 20% in private schools; UDISE report statistics

For the first time, the number of female teachers in all the schools of the country is more than that of males i.e. 53.3%. At present there are a total of 98 lakh teachers in 14.72 lakh schools of the country, out of which 52.3 lakh are female teachers. In 2018-19 this number was 47.14 lakh. Since then the number of women teachers in schools has continuously increased.

These figures have been revealed in the report of Unified District Information System for Education Plus i.e. UDISE + for the year 2023-24.

Number of female teachers increased by 3.3% in 5 years

In the year 2018-19, male teachers were 50%. Out of total 94.3 lakh school teachers, 47.16 lakh teachers were male. There were 47.14 lakh i.e. 49.98% female teachers. While the number of female teachers has increased to 52 lakh in 2023-24, the number of male teachers has decreased to 45.7 lakh.

If we look at it in percentage, the share of female teachers has increased by 3.3% to 53.3%, while the share of male teachers has decreased from 3% to 46.6%.

In the year 2019-20, women teachers had crossed the 50% mark for the first time. After this, the share of female teachers increased from 51.3% to 52.3% in 2022-23 and 53.3% in 2023-24.

Female teachers increased by 20% in private schools, only 6% in government schools.

The UDISE Plus report also shows that the number of women teachers is increasing in private schools rather than government schools. For the last five years, the share of men in government schools has remained high.

In 2018-19, out of 49.47 lakh government school teachers, 28.18 lakh i.e. 57% were male and 21.29 lakh i.e. 43% were female teachers. In 2023-24, the number of female teachers in government schools increased by about 6% to 22.65 lakh. Whereas the number of male teachers is 27.72 lakh.

Whereas in private schools, the number of female teachers has continuously remained more than male teachers for the last 5 years. There has been an increase of about 20%. In 2023-24, out of total 37.30 lakh private school teachers, 66% i.e. about 24.76 lakh are female teachers. Whereas in 2018-19, out of total 33.04 lakh private school teachers, there were 20.63 lakh female teachers.

However, even in government schools in states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Punjab, there are more female teachers than male teachers. For example, 78% of teachers in government schools in Kerala are women. At the same time, 67% teachers in Tamil Nadu, 64% in Punjab and 61% teachers in Delhi government schools are female.

15% more male teachers in higher education continuously

Although these are school education figures. The number of men in higher education continues to exceed that of women. According to the All India Survey of Higher Education (AISHE) data for the year 2021-22, female teachers constitute only 43% in higher education compared to 57% male teachers. The figures were almost the same in the year 2018-19 also. At that time, male teachers in higher education were 58% and female teachers were 42%.
