Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallawal broke his fast unto death on 6 April after 130 days. He launched a fast on November 26, 2024 on other demands, including giving legal guarantee to the minimum support price i.e. MSP.
On Sunday, Dalwal announced to break his fast unto death at Kisan Mahapanchayat in Sirhind Grain Mandi of Fatehgarh Sahib.
A day earlier, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan appealed to Dallawal to end the fast and said that on May 4, farmers will meet in Chandigarh.
Leaving SI’s job and started farming
After completing his studies, Dallewal got a sub-inspector (SI) job in the Punjab Police. But he left him and chose farming on about 17 acres of agricultural land located in his native village.
Became President of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta-Siddhupur)
Dallewal began raising farmers’ issues from the 1980s. Sardar Pishora Singh Siddhupur established the ‘Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta-Siddhupur)’ in 1989, Dallewal joined this organization. He played various responsibilities in the organization and became its president in 2017, struggling continuously. After Pishora Singh’s death in 2017, Dallawal, who worked from village level to block level and then as Faridkot District President, was elected the national president of the organization.
After the death of Pishora Singh, Dallewal became the president of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta-Siddhupur).
When Dallawal took over, this union was limited to only 8 to 10 districts, but today it is active in every district of Punjab and has become the second largest farmer union in the state.
Dallawal marched towards Delhi on February 23, 2018 with a convoy of tractors for demanding the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission and demand for loan waiver. The Punjab government stopped him at Cheema Mandi in Sangrur, where he stayed for 28 days.
3 joined the movement against agricultural laws
Then, in the year 2020-21, Dallawal played an active role in the agitation on the borders of Delhi against 3 agricultural laws under the banner of United Kisan Morcha (SKM). His union was part of SKM.
3 Agricultural Law-
1. Farmer Yield Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facility) Act, 2020
2. Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Price Assurance and Agricultural Services Act, 2020
3. Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020
In protest against these laws, farmers from all over the country, especially the farmers of Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, launched a long movement, including pickets, hunger strikes and caming on the Delhi border for months.
Finally, on November 19, 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the withdrawal of these three laws.
Dallawal is the leader of the United Kisan Morcha (Non Political).
United Kisan Morcha (non-political) formed
After disagreeing with Balveer Singh Rajewal’s decision to contest the assembly elections of 2022 United Kisan Morcha, Dallewal separated his union from SKM. He then formed the United Kisan Morcha (non-political). It consists of 28 farmer organizations.
On 8 June 2023, a hunger strike was carried out outside the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), including 21 demands, such as 10-hour power supply for tubewells. The strike lasted till June 14, when the police admitted him to the hospital.
Delhi Chalo 2.0 started under the leadership of Dallewal
Delhi Chalo 2.0 began in February 2024. This movement was led by Dallewal in association with SKM (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM). The demands included the minimum support price ie MSP’s legal guarantee, debt waiver and justice for victims of Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
Due to strict border security by the BJP -ruled Haryana government, the ‘Delhi March’ of farmers stayed for about 11 months. Despite this, in view of no softening of the government’s demands on the demands of the farmers, on 26 November 2024, Dallawal started a fast unto death at the Khanouri demonstration site in Sangrur district of Punjab.
