Today i.e. on 15 May, International Family Day is being celebrated all over the world. The United Nations General Assembly started this day in 1983 to make people aware of the social, economic and demographic impact on families.

Dr. Vishal Ghule, Associate Professor in the Psychology Department of Mit-WPU, Pune, says that the role of families is important in everyone’s life, especially when it is about the emotional development of children. Family is the first school for the child.

What is emotional intelligence?

The art of understanding and managing emotions is called emotional intelligence. When someone can control their emotions, maintain peace even in pressure and end the debate as soon as possible, then it is called emotionally intelligent.

Children learn to understand emotions from conversation

A very effective but often unseen aspect in raising children is everyday family conversation. Whether this conversation is small or big, it helps children to deal with stress, understand their feelings and overcome the difficult situation. This is not a congenital quality, but we learn it through experiences, relationships and dialogues.

Family dialogue is not just a medium to share information. This teaches children how to deal with emotions, how to solve problems and how to handle themselves in difficult times. When parents talk openly to the children and listen carefully, they teach how to react with thoughtfully in difficult situations.

Children feel connected to grandmother’s stories

Another very effective way is to increase the family emotional strength or emotional intelligence and that is to tell the story. When family shares both stories, happiness and difficulties of their past, children feel connected to their family history.

Researchers like Robin Fabush have found that teenagers, even if they show less interest in conversation, they remember these family stories and feel deeply connected with them.
