Delhi University is preparing to start a PhD program in Hindu Studies from the 2025-26 academic year. This preparation is being done on the basis of a proposal of the Standing Committee.
The governing body of the Center for Hindu Studies has recommended that the Hindu Studies PhD program be launched in 2025-26.
The program was earlier scheduled to start in the current academic year (2024-2025), but was postponed after the proposal. The Academic Council of DU will take a decision on this proposal during its meeting today i.e. on 27th December.
Hindu Joint Director- This will increase opportunities in Hindu Studies
Joint Director of Hindu Studies, Prerna Malhotra, while talking to a media channel, said that the aim of the initiative to start PhD in Hindu Studies is to find new opportunities for students.
Malhotra further said, ‘Our Governing Board has recommended starting PhD in Hindu Studies. This matter will be placed before the Academic Council. Students constantly contact us with questions related to Hindu Studies and what research opportunities they can get in Hindu Studies. Students are continuously making inquiries related to this. Especially those students who have already passed JRF and NET in Hindu Studies.
Malhotra said, Delhi University is a big institute, it should be started to advance research in Hindu studies.
Initially PhD will be held on 10 seats
Initially, 10 seats can be brought in the Hindu Studies Center with this proposal. In which people of all categories will be included. It has been said in this proposal that these seats can be increased later considering the need of infrastructure and applications of the institute.
The governing body had prepared the proposal on June 21.
If the Council approves the proposal, it will be presented to the Standing Committee which will take a decision on it.
The proposal states, ‘In continuation of the decision of the Governing Body of the Hindu Studies Center taken on June 21, 2024, a decision has been taken on the proposal to start PhD in Hindu Studies from the academic year 2025-26.’
If the proposal is accepted then students will be able to do research on Hindu studies like Shastra and Veda.
Those studying Hindu studies including PhD will get a chance
Eligibility for PhD program will be as per the rules of Delhi University. Applicants should have Master’s degree in Hindu Studies or related subjects with at least 55% marks along with JRF/NET or PhD examination of University.
Until new appointments are made, it will be handled by faculty from affiliated departments and colleges of the research university who have expertise in Hindu Studies and are willing to teach it.
