Devjit Saikia will take over from Jai Shah. He will remain the Secretary of BCCI till September 2025.
Devjit Saikia, the interim secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), will be the next secretary of the board. He has filed nomination for the post of Secretary. The last date for nomination was January 4, apart from him no one else filled the nomination form.
By-elections will be held for the posts of Secretary and Treasurer in BCCI on January 12. Since there is no other candidate, Saikia will continue on the post of secretary. He took over in December from Jay Shah, who has now become the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Devjit Saikia has been the Joint Secretary of BCCI since 2019.
Prabhtej Bhatia will be the treasurer. Only one nomination was filed for the post of Treasurer of BCCI. Prabhtej Singh Bhatia filed nomination for this post, hence it is confirmed that he will also be elected unopposed in the by-election. Nominations were to be filed by 5 pm on January 4. Nominations will be scrutinized till January 6, then elections will be held on January 12.
BCCI meeting also on 12th January BCCI has not yet taken official approval to conduct by-elections. However, there is a special general meeting of the board on January 12 itself. Former Election Commission Chief AK Jyoti is the electoral officer for the BCCI by-election. She will conduct the elections.
Saikia is part of Assam Cricket Association Devjit Saikia was made the interim secretary of BCCI on 6 December itself. He is part of Assam Cricket Association. Who replaced Jai Shah. Earlier there were reports that Arun Jaitley’s son Rohan Jaitley would become the secretary, but last month itself, the name of Joint Secretary Saikia came forward.
On the other hand, Bhatia is part of Chhattisgarh Cricket Association. He will take over as treasurer in place of Ashish Shelar. Ashish became a part of the Maharashtra government and as per the rules, central and state government ministers cannot become a part of the BCCI.
Devjit Saikia had attended the ICC meeting in Dubai last month as a BCCI representative.
The post of Joint Secretary will be vacant The post of Joint Secretary will become vacant as soon as Saikia takes over as Secretary. The decision on the post of Joint Secretary will also be taken in the meeting on January 12. Saikia will remain on the post of BCCI Secretary only till September. After that there will be elections again.
A member can remain on the official post in BCCI for only 3 years, after which he has to serve a cooling off period of 3 years. The three-year tenure of the present post of Secretary will end in September this year. Before Saikia, Jai Shah was appointed to this post for two and a half years. Saikia will be elected secretary in the by-election on January 12. He can also apply for this post again in September.
