There was a fierce scuffle between students and police at the Campus Law Center of Delhi University on 16 November. The students were protesting demanding extension of the exam date.
The students allege that the police resorted to lathi charge, sprayed chilli powder and fired tear gas shells to remove the protesting students from there. Many students got injured due to this. However, the police have denied these allegations.
Students had gathered to protest against completion of incomplete syllabus and change in faculty.
Semester exams of Law Campus Center are to start from 26th December. Students say that their syllabus is still incomplete. The faculty has been changed in between. There was also delay in bringing in new faculty. Suddenly the syllabus was updated. Due to this he had to protest.
Students said- ‘Tear gas shells fired, lathi charge, chilli powder sprayed’
Hundreds of students had gathered since Monday morning to protest. The protesting students said that when the number of students increased, they tried to meet the Dean of the Law Faculty of the University regarding their demands.
A student said, ‘Every time the Dean consoles us, she goes on medical leave for 10 days. We were standing here since 10 in the morning. Dean ma’am came at 2 o’clock. We will not move from here until the new date sheet comes.
Meanwhile, a scuffle started with the police who came to the spot. Another student said, ‘We were protesting peacefully for more than 8 hours, but instead of paying attention to our concerns, the university administration resorted to police action.’
The student further said, ‘Dean Madam herself called Delhi Police and CRPF here. Two DCP rank officers, several IPS officers and at least 10 to 11 other officers were present here. Heavy force was used on the students.
Heavy police force deployment can also be seen in the pictures and videos obtained from the spot. Amidst the crowd of students, there are several policemen carrying batons. An argument can also be seen between students and policemen.
The students allege that the police started lathi charge to disperse the crowd of students. Fired tear gas shells and sprayed chilli powder.
‘Police said- ‘Students had surrounded the dean’s office’
Speaking to reporters, a police officer said, ‘Students had surrounded the dean’s office. He was not letting them go home. It was 12 o’clock at night. We were given a written request by Anju Wali Tiku, Dean of the University Administration and Law Centre. Therefore, local police staff was called to the spot.
A student told journalists, the college campus was closed from all sides. A gate was opened and lathicharge was done on the students who were protesting peacefully. There could have been a stampede due to lathi charge, but we fully helped the college administration and provided them security.
The police officer said that DCP Raja Bantiha of Delhi North area had reached the spot and tried to convince the students. Some students also held a meeting with the Dean. Now the situation is completely under control.
Police also say that there was no lathicharge nor tear gas shells fired on the students.
The police officer said, ‘As per my information, the exam which was scheduled to start from December 26 has been postponed, now a committee will be formed to decide the new date.’
We called Anju Wali Tiku, Dean of the Law Centre, several times for her response to the students’ demands and allegations, but she did not pick up the phone.
