From 2025, the UG level exam of Common University Entrance Test (CUET) is going to be held again in computer based mode i.e. online. M Jagadish Kumar, Chairman of the University Grant Commission (UGC), the examination conducting body, has given this information in a recent interview.
He has also said that now students will be able to give CUET-UG exam in other subjects besides their 12th subjects. That means, if you have taken Maths in the board exam, you will still be able to give CUET from Biology or other subjects.
According to M Jagadish Kumar, an expert panel of UGC after reviewing the exam recommended some changes in it. The panel suggested these changes after considering many things like structure of the paper, number of papers, exam time and syllabus. After this, UGC approved these changes in the recent meeting held in Mumbai.
M Jagadish Kumar said that the reason for conducting the exam in CBT mode from 2025 is that this mode is more reliable and secure as compared to other methods. The opportunity to choose the subjects of their choice is being given so that students can get the opportunity to choose any stream in higher education. Regarding removal of optional questions, he said in the interview that when some questions are optional then students choose different questions, whose difficulty level can be different.
CUET-UG exam was held for the first time in 2022. The exam was held in several shifts from July 15 to August 30. Due to this, normalization of marks had to be done during the final result. In 2024, the exam was held in hybrid mode, due to lack of resources the exam had to be canceled in Delhi.
Jagdish Kumar says that every year we are trying to improve the exam by learning from past experiences. The changes that have been approved will soon be brought into the public domain and a final notification will be issued after feedback.
Admission is available in central universities of the country through CUET. CUET exam is conducted for admission in all the central universities of the country. Before 2022, admission in universities like DU was done on the basis of 12th marks. CUET was made mandatory for Central Universities in 2022. State, private and deemed universities can also adopt it.
CUET was brought under the system of one entrance exam instead of separate entrance exams of universities. Jagdish Kumar said that the cut-off of 100% for admission in top universities is ridiculous. He had said that CUET will provide equal opportunities to all the students of the country.
