1. Cabinet approves ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill: The Union Cabinet has approved the One Country, One Election Bill on December 12. This bill can be presented in Parliament during this winter session next week.
The government wants to build a consensus on this bill, hence the bill will be sent from Parliament to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for discussion.
- A panel was formed on September 2, 2023 under the chairmanship of former President Ramnath Kovind to consider ‘One Nation, One Election’.
- This panel, after discussion with all parties and experts and 191 days of research, submitted its report to President Draupadi Murmu on March 14.
- In September, the Central Government had approved the recommendations of the High Level Committee formed for ‘One Nation, One Election’, in which it was proposed to hold Lok Sabha, State Assembly and local body elections simultaneously in a phased manner.
- According to the recommendations, the first bill will amend Article 82A of the Constitution, allowing simultaneous expiry of the tenure of the Lok Sabha and the Assemblies.
- Consent from the states will not be required to implement this bill, but to conduct the local body elections along with the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, it will need to be approved by at least 50% of the state assemblies.
- According to the committee report, the tenure of many state assemblies will be reduced to implement ‘One Nation, One Election’.
- In states where assembly elections are held by the end of 2023, their tenure can be extended.
- If all parties agree to the Law Commission’s proposal, it will be implemented from 2029 only. For this, assembly elections will have to be held in 25 states by December 2026.

2. Musk becomes the first person with a net worth of $400 billion: According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index released on December 11, SpaceX founder and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has reached a net worth of $400 billion. He is the first person in history to do so.

3. 54 journalists killed across the world in the year 2024: In 2024, 54 journalists were killed worldwide in the course of their work or because of their profession. The Israeli army is responsible for killing one-third of these journalists. Reporters Without Borders (RSF), an organization that monitors press freedom, gave this information in its annual report published on December 12.

6. Khelo India Winter Games 2025 will be held in Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir: Khelo India Winter Games-2025 will be held in two different phases in Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. Ice event will be organized in Ladakh from 23 to 27 January. Whereas, snow events will be played in Jammu and Kashmir between 22 to 25 February.
The Sports Ministry announced this on 11 December.
- Ice competitions like ice hockey and ice skating will be held in the Union Territory of Ladakh from January 23 to 27.
- At the same time, snow competitions like alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, ski mountaineering (skimo) and snow-boarding will be organized in Jammu and Kashmir from 22 to 25 January.
- This will be the second consecutive year that Ladakh will host a portion of the Khelo India Winter Games.
