Reading as a contract assistant professor for 20 years

This is the case of Dairy Technology College, Sri Venkateshwar Veterinary University, Andhra. According to media reports, Dr. Verma was an appointment as a contractual professor in 2005. His responsibility was as much as a regular assistant professor, but due to the contract, he continued to get salary very low.

He continued to work like this for 5 years. Every 6 months, his contract was renewed with a gap of 2-3 days. But he stayed on the contract.

In 2010, the UGC implemented the rule that ‘equal pay for equal work’ should be given. But even after this instruction, there was no change in the salary of Dr. Verma. In such a situation, he complained to the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

The university told the court disqualified

In 2014, the High Court ruled in favor of Dr. Verma and directed the university to give them equal pay. However, the university said that Dr. Verma is not eligible to get equal pay, as he has not qualified the UGC NET exam, and he has not been selected by the Selection Committee.

According to a media report, SVV University has recruited more than 150 faculty in the year 2012- 2013, which are not NET qualified, and are getting full salary and promotion. But Dr. Verma could not get equal pay despite the Supreme Court’s ‘equal pay for equal work’ (2016) verdict and the instructions of the Andhra High Court.

In October 2024, Dr. Verma complained to the university’s VC about the entire matter. He also received assurance of action, but the file is still stuck.

‘The chair missing from the department’

The latest case is to disappear the chair from the department. Actually, there were new chairs in the department, one of which was also received by Dr. Verma. But on June 19, when he was on leave, the Associate Dean Dr. Reddy removed his chair saying that she belonged to another department.

The next day a visiting chair was placed in his place. Dr. Verma, describing it as derogatory and discriminatory, kept his belongings on the ground. However, according to media reports, the matter has been resolved after the intervention of VC.

The total faculty members said that the removal of the chair was a thoughtful step. He has suffered this due to Dr. Verma’s ongoing struggle against the university for 20 years.

A letter written to the President

Dr. Verma has now also written a letter to President Draupadi Murmu for complaints of long struggle for 2 decades. He has demanded that he should also get an arrears salary stopped for so long due to the order of the court. He has written in the letter that now he has no money left to continue this fight….
