On the second day of the Leeds Test, Rishabh Pant has set a record by scoring a century. He became the batsman to score the most centuries as a wicketkeeper. He completed the century from Six, then jumped and celebrated.
Rishabh Pant has left MS Dhoni behind in terms of Indian wicketkeeper’s highest century in Test cricket. He has now scored 7 centuries. Dhoni scored 6 centuries in his Test career.
Born in Uttarakhand, played from Delhi
Rishabh was born on 4 October 1997 in Roorkee, Uttarakhand. His father’s name is Rajendra Pant and mother Saroj Pant. He also has an elder sister Sakshi Pant.
From the age of 12, Pant used to come to Delhi with his mother on weekend to take training from Tarak Sinha at Sonnet Cricket Academy. During this time he used to stay with his mother in the gurudwara of Moti Bagh.
The turning point of his career came from Delhi during the Under-19 match against Assam. He became the top scorer by scoring 35 runs in the first inning of this match. Pant scored 150 runs in the second inning of the match.
During the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in February 2016, Rishabh Pant scored 50 runs in 18 balls against Nepal.
People would tease by saying ‘Dhoni-Dhoni’
Mahendra Singh Dhoni retired during 2019-20. After this, the Indian team needed a new wicketkeeper. In such a situation, Rishabh Pant became the first choice of the team but poor performance was hindered in his career.
Meanwhile, KL Rahul also emerged as a wicketkeeper for the team. Rishabh’s performance in the IPL was also weak.
During this time Pant was repeatedly criticized. The media was constantly blaming him for the team’s defeat. Apart from this, cricket lovers used to compare him with Dhoni. Many times it happened that Pant descended for batting and Crude would start shouting slogans of Dhoni-Dhoni.
Car accident in 2022
Pant was returning to his home Roorkee when his Mercedes-AMG GLE43 Coupe, 5:20 am, hit the divider in Mangalore, Haridwar and overturned and caught fire. Actually, the driver of the car was tired and he fell asleep. This became the main reason for the accident.
After the accident, Pant said- “For the first time I felt that now my world is over.” He said that escape was like ‘miracle’.
Pant broke the glass of the car and took out himself, by then the car was damaged by burning with fire. They had two cuts on the head, bruises in the back and leg and the right knee ligament.
His right wrist, ankle and legs also suffered injuries. Two Hero Drivers Sushil Kumar and Paramjit Singh took out from the car to the ambulance which was later honored.
IPL returned in 2024
Pant’s face and head had plastic surgery. After a serious injury, he had to distance from cricket for 16 to 18 months. He returned to IPL 2024 in March 2024.
