The number of girls wearing labkot has been increasing continuously in classes across the country. In 12th, the Science Stream was considered to be a mail dominant for a time, where the girls have come forward and handled the lab overtus.

This trend has been revealed in the latest report released by the Ministry of Information. It has been reported in this report that the number of girls who pass 12th from Science Stream has become more than arts and commerce stream for the first time.

According to another report released in September 2024

  • 12th pass girls’ difference in 2014 from Arts and Science Stream – 7.5 Lakh
  • 12th pass girls’ difference from Arts and Science Stream in 2017 – 5.5 Lakh
  • In 2021, Arts and Science Stream of 12th pass girls – 4.1 lakh
  • In 2024, this trend was reversed and 12th pass girls from science have increased to 90 thousand more than arts.

Counting of girls decreased in commerce

In 2023, out of the total students passing from Science Stream, girls were only 39%, while in 2024 the number increased to 44%. While the number of girls has increased in science stream, these numbers in commerce have decreased in the past years. In 2023, where 8.16 lakh girls passed from commerce, in 2024 the count increased to 8.07 lakhs.

The number of girls passing 12th from Science Stream from 2013 to 2024 has increased from 13.4 lakh to 28.1 lakhs, which is more than 2 times. Meanwhile, the total number of boys and girls has increased from 36.3 lakh to 61 lakhs.

Backward girls are also breaking barriers

Girls coming from backward classes are also making their place fast in Mail Dominated Science Stream. According to Moe’s report, the trend of science stream has increased year after year among the girls of SC-ST category.

Girls also dominate NEET, but toppers missing from list

In the NEET UG result released on 14 June, girls were counted more. Out of a total of 12,36,531 candidates, 58.45% of the total were girls. However, girls were only 15 in the top 100. In 2024, 57.6% of the total passed candidates were girls. But only 22 girls were able to place in the top 100.

Similarly, JEE Mains also had only 1 girl out of 14 top scorers of session 1, while sessions 2 had 2 girls out of 24 top scorers. In the 2024 exam, there was not a single girl in 23 full scorers of session 1, while sessions 2 had only 2 girls out of 56 top scorers.

Data shows that the success at school level is only the first step. To make the field of science involved for girls, it is very important to continue to meet in guidance and similar opportunities in higher education and career. Without this, this wave in Stem (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) at the school level will be lost again.
