Within five days, India’s two superstar cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket. Now there is no senior player playing more than 60 Tests except Ravindra Jadeja in the team. In such a situation, the big question is, who will replace Rohit and Virat in playing-11?
Who can replace Kohli?
Virat Kohli today announced retirement from Test cricket on his Insta handle. He batting at number-4 in the team and is the most experienced member of the squad. His departure will create a huge gap of experienced and strong batter of middle order in the team. There are also 5 contenders to fill.
- Shreyas Iyer: Shreyas, who made her three formats from India, is the number-1 contender to replace Kohli in the Test. He has confirmed his place in the ODI team, but is currently out due to poor performance in Tests. He has scored 1 century and 5 fifty in 14 Tests. Shreyas also has 15 first class centuries.
- Silver Patidar: In the last Test series against England, Patidar replaced Kohli. Virat could not play the series for personal reasons then. However, Patidar could not put a single fifty in 3 matches. Given the performance in domestic cricket, he can make a place in the squad once again for the England series. Rajat has 13 First Class Century.
- Sarfaraz Khan: Sarfaraz, who made Test debut for India last year, has scored 1 century and 3 fifty. However, he did not get a chance in a single match on the tour of Australia. Sarfaraz is an average of 65.61 in first class cricket. They are considered experts of domestic pitches, so it is difficult to replace Kohli in foreign conditions.
- Dhruv Jurael: 24 -year -old Jurael has played 4 Tests for India. He also caught the attention of the selectors from his technique on the tour of Australia. Young Jurlel also takes wicketkeeping, in such a situation, gives more options to join the playing-11. Management for England tour can also invest on them.
- Karun Nair: Karun, who attracted everyone’s attention from his performance in the previous season of domestic cricket, also has experience of playing in England. They are good options as Kohli’s replacement. Along with scoring a triple century for India on the home ground, he has also scored 23 First Class Century.
Who can replace Rohit?
Rohit Sharma retired from the Test on 7 May. For the last 6 years, he was opening in a red ball. KL Rahul may be permanent in his place at the opening position. Who opened with Yashasvi Jaiswal on the tour of Australia. Shubman can also return to open. Apart from these, 4 young players are claimants to replace Rohit.
- Sai Sudarshan: 23 -year -old Sudarshan is in discussion after his performance in IPL. He has played 3 ODIs and 1 T20 for India. Seeing his technique and skills, experts like Ravi Shastri have described him as fit for the Test team. Sudarshan has scored 7 centuries in first class cricket and has a county cricket experience in England.
- Devdutt Padikkal: The 24 -year -old Padikkal had a chance on the tour of Australia. He did excellent batting in front of the new ball. Apart from 2 Tests, he has also played 2 T20s. They continue to play first class matches with India-A team. He has scored 2815 runs by scoring 6 centuries in this format.
- Abhimanyu Ishwar: Rohit could not play the first match on the tour of Australia, in his place, Ishwaran got a chance in the squad. He has not yet got a chance to make India debut, but he has scored 27 centuries in 101 matches of first class.
- Rituraj Gaikwad: Gaikwad, who made her debut in India in white ball cricket, is also a candidate to replace Rohit. However, they give more priority to white ball than red balls in domestic cricket. It will be important to see if there is an idea about including them in the squad. Gaikwad has 7 first class centuries.
Jadeja is the only experienced left
After Rohit and Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja left the only senior player in the Test team, whose career is more than 12 years. It is believed that if Jadeja does not retire from this format in 1-2 years, he will also be sidelined like Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane.
Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Wriddhiman Saha were also some players, who were dropped from the team before retirement. Team India has started investing on young players. In such a situation, the number-1 test all-rounder can also fall.
Apart from Jadeja, Jaspreet Bumrah and KL Rahul are a bit experienced in the Test team. Both have played more than 45 tests. Bumrah is 31 and Rahul is 33 years old. Given the injury, nothing can be said on how long Bumrah’s career will be. At the same time, Rahul can play 3 to 4 years more Test cricket.
Gill and Pant captaincy contenders
According to the news agency PTI, ‘Shubman Gill can be the captain of the Test team and Rishabh Pant vice -captain. Given Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness, it is difficult to give him a leadership role. BCCI source said that if Bumrah does not become captain, then there is no point in making him a vice -captain. Bumrah has also refused to captain his fitness.
England tour will start from June 20
Team India has to play a 5 -Test series in England from 20 June. After Rohit’s retirement, the team will play in the presence of the new captaincy. India’s team can be released by 23 May for the series. This will be India’s first series in the new cycle of the World Test Championship.
