The online application process for UGC NET December exam has started. Some big changes will be seen in this time’s NET exam. This is the first time graduates will appear for NET exam. After passing the exam, he will be eligible for PhD and fellowship. Now NET scores have also been accepted for PhD eligibility across the country. This was being demanded for a long time. Therefore, this time the candidates who pass NET will be eligible in three categories.
Graduates will also be able to give UGC NET
NTA i.e. National Testing Agency conducts NET i.e. National Eligibility Test twice a year for the University Grant Commission. Candidates who clear UGC NET become eligible to become Assistant Professor and/or get Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in different universities of the country.
In June 2024, UGC Chairman M. Jagadish Kumar had said that students who have completed their graduation 4 years from this year can also apply for UGC NET. Rajneesh Tripathi, research scholar at Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University, says that 4-year graduate courses are currently available in only a few universities of the country. These are called Integrated Bachelor Courses. However, currently most students take a 3-year graduation program.
Candidates who pass NET will be eligible in three categories
Till this year, candidates who qualified UGC NET exam were eligible for two things – JRF and Assistant Professor. They used to get a NET score, on the basis of which some universities considered these candidates eligible for PhD. Most of the universities used to conduct separate entrance examination for admission to PhD.
UGC also said in its notification on March 28, 2024 that to do PhD in higher educational institutions of the country, candidates have to pass several entrance exams. In such a situation, under the new education policy 2020, it has been decided to implement a national entrance exam for PhD.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving PhD, JRF opportunities to graduates?
Research scholar Rajneesh Tripathi says that giving opportunity to graduates through UGC NET will have two benefits. Students joining 4-year integrated course are taught research related courses in the last year, in such a situation, they can directly target for JRF or PhD by taking admission in the course. Their time spent in post graduation will be saved. Besides, after graduation, he will also be able to decide in which subject he wants to do research under PhD.
However, Professor Apoorvanand of Hindi Department in Delhi University does not agree with this decision of UGC to give opportunity to graduates. He points out two problems in this-
- There is a lot of difference in the exam pattern of 4-year Integrated Bachelor course and UGC’s NET exam. Students do not pay attention to the curriculum because they have set the target of PhD right from their graduation.
- The curriculum of the 4-year Bachelor course is designed in such a way that the candidate gets less time for research subjects. Later these students go for PhD, whereas PhD requires in-depth understanding of the subject.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the 3 categories of eligibility in UGC NET result?
Research scholar Rajneesh Tripathi says that under the old system, many qualified students did not get a chance to do PhD. Often, only those candidates who had received research fellowship were selected in the PhD program. In some universities, students had to give a separate entrance exam. This process was not transparent to some extent. Universities had their own autonomy.
In such a situation, there was a demand for a long time that a test should be conducted at the national level for admission to PhD. Now, recognition of NET scores in all universities will provide a level-playing field. Candidates will not have to appear for exams from different universities. This will save time. Also, eligible candidates will get a chance.
Whereas Professor Apoorvanand is against the decision of giving admission in PhD on the basis of NET score. He says 4 main things-
- Even in countries like America, there is no common test for admission to PhD. This decision has ended the autonomy of universities.
- NTA is now asking only objective questions in the UGC NET exam, whereas earlier universities used to look at the analytical skills and writing ability of the candidate through subjective questions in the PhD entrance exam. Passing this exam will not make the candidate a capable researcher.
- UGC has created a situation of confusion for the students. Now students are finding it easier to do PhD, whereas such PhD is nothing more than a higher degree. With this system, there will not be good academic opportunities for PhD candidates.
- Fixing the eligibility in categories may cause disadvantage to JRF candidates, because their selection will be completely based on the interview conducted by the university, whereas those students can get benefit in whose merit NET marks have 70% weightage. Will be given.
