Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, India could not reach the final of the World Test Championship 2025.
Rohit Sharma has retired from Test cricket. He shared the story on his Instagram account and gave information about retirement. Rohit, who has taken retirement before T20, will continue to play ODI. On Wednesday evening, there were reports that he would be removed from the Test captaincy on the tour of England. After which he said goodbye to red ball cricket.

While sharing the story on his Instagram handle, Rohit Sharma wrote, ‘Hello, I want to tell everyone that I am taking retirement from Test cricket. It was a moment of pride for me to represent the country in red ball cricket. Thank you everyone for love and support. I will keep playing for the country in ODI format. ,
Rohit Sharma took retirement from the Test by sharing Instagram Story.
Rohit scored 12 Test centuries
Rohit made a Test debut for India in 2013. He could confirm his place in playing-11 during 2021 and also got captaincy in 2022. He scored runs at an average of 40.57 in 67 Tests for India, but his average dropped out of the house to 31.01.
Rohit averaged 24.38 in Australia and 16.63 in South Africa. However, in England he scored at an average of 44.66. He has also scored a century while opening on the last tour. After Rohit’s retirement, Team India can focus on fitting Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul as a permanent opener in the Test team.
Rohit flopped against New Zealand and Australia
Rohit also flopped badly from BAT in the last Test series against New Zealand and Australia. He could score against New Zealand at an average of 15.16 and Australia at an average of 6.20. The selectors have now decided that with this form of Rohit, they cannot be given the responsibility of captaincy.
If the test captaincy is taken away from Rohit, it will also be clear that he can be seated outside the playing-11 due to poor performance in England. In Australia, Rohit did not open in the opening matches. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul performed well in the series by opening.
Rohit could not play the first test. He became a part of the playing-11 of the second Test, but landed in the middle order to bat. India then won the first Test under the captaincy of Jasprit Bumrah, but lost 2 matches under Rohit’s captaincy. He did not play the last Test in Sydney and now took retirement.
New captain will be chosen for England series
According to the express report, Team India will choose the new Test captain for the Test series starting in June against England. However, Rohit will be kept as part of the batter squad. It is also being said that BCCI is ready to accept the selectors’ decision.
Rohit Sharma has scored 4301 runs by scoring 12 Test centuries.
Rohit will continue to captain in ODIs
His form in red ball cricket is believed to be the major reason for the 38 -year -old Rohit being snatched away from Test captaincy. Also, under his captaincy, the team lost 3–0 against New Zealand at home and the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia by 3–1. Due to these defeats, Team India could not qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
Rohit has expressed his desire to continue captaincy
In March itself, it was told in the express report that BCCI will keep Rohit the captain on the England round. Rohit himself has expressed his desire to continue the captaincy in a podcast with former Australia captain Michael Clarke.
Rohit had said that he is excited to lead the pace attacks of Bumrah, Shami and Siraj in England. However, the Selection Committee recently described the board as its future plan at the meeting at BCCI Headquarters in Mumbai.
Rohit Sharma captained India in 24 Tests. In 12, the team won and lost 9.
Rohit not fit for test captaincy
A BCCI source said, ‘The selectors want a new captain for the tour of England and Rohit is no longer fit for the Test captaincy. Especially his poor form in the red ball did not make him fit for this format. The selectors want to give a young captain responsibility for the new cycle of WTC. The committee has also informed BCCI that Rohit will no longer captain the Test.
