Indian Foreign Service i.e. IFS Officer Nidhi Tiwari has been appointed as private secretary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The order issued on March 29 by the Department of Personal and Training (DOPT) said that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Nidhi.

Nidhi Tiwari, a 2014 batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), was earlier employed at the post of Deputy Secretary in PMO.

This appointment has been made on the basis of co-terminus, that is, they will remain in this position as long as it is PM Modi’s term or until further orders.

Gains 96th rank in UPSC CSE

Nidhi Tiwari achieved 96th rank in the 2013 Union Public Service Commission i.e. UPSC Civil Service Exam. He got the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) due to making a place in the top 100. Nidhi’s first choice was IFS, after which he placed IAS and IPS.

After joining the IFS, Nidhi Tiwari started her service in the Ministry of External Affairs. There he worked as an under -secretary in the division of dishonor and international security affairs.

In this role, he represented India’s interests on issues related to global security and disorder.

NSA has reported to Ajit Doval

In November 2022, Nidhi Tiwari was appointed as the under secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). In January 2023, he was promoted and made deputy secretary. During his tenure as a deputy secretary at PMO, Nidhi Tiwari worked in ‘Foreign and Security’ vertical. This vertical National Security Advisor (NSA) reports to Ajit Doval.

Nidhi Tiwari worked on foreign affairs, nuclear power, security matters and issues related to the state of Rajasthan.

Private secretary will remain until the tenure of the Prime Minister

On March 29, 2025, Nidhi Tiwari was appointed as private secretary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as per the order of the Department of Personnel and Training (DOPT). This appointment is on a ‘co-terminus’ basis, which means that it may be associated with the Prime Minister’s tenure. While in this post, Nidhi Tiwari will now take over PM Modi’s daily administrative work.

Salary will be determined according to Matrix Level 14

The pay scale of officers appointed to the post of Private Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office is determined as per the matrix level 14. At this level, salary is Rs 1,44,200 to Rs 2,18,200 per month. Apart from this, dearness allowance (DA), housing allowance (HRA), travel allowance (TA) and other allowances are also given.

Apart from Nidhi Tiwari, officials like Vivek Kumar (IAS, 2004 batch), Hardik Satishchandra Shah (IAS, 2010 batch) and Sanjeev Kumar Sinhal (IAS) are also working as private secretaries of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

There will be 5 types of responsibilities on Nidhi as a private secretary-

1. Managing the schedule of the Prime Minister

  • Management of their meetings, trips and programs properly.
  • To ensure that everything is on time and smoothly.

2. Policy and Administrative Coordination

  • Creating better coordination between Prime Minister Office, Ministry and other departments.
  • To implement the policy and monitor their progress.

3. To look at Foreign and Security Affairs

  • Assisting the Prime Minister on issues related to international affairs and security.
  • Helping the implementation of the decision related to the foreign policy.

4. Maintaining Communication and Confidentiality

  • Handling the Prime Minister’s correspondence and communication.
  • Ensuring security of confidantity and sensitive information.

5. Implementing PM’s priorities

  • To make the Prime Minister’s instructions properly to the concerned parties.
  • Keeping an eye on the progress of various government projects and initiatives.
