India’s famous table tennis player Achta Sharat Kamal announced his retirement from professional table tennis on Wednesday, 5 February. He said that the upcoming ‘World Table Tennis Star Contender, Chennai’ will be his last tournament.
With this tournament, his magnificent career will end more than 2 decades. The World Table Tennis i.e. WTT event will be held from 25 to 30 March 2025.
Made in the final of the National Championship in 2002
He came from the national team before the 2002 Commonwealth Games, where he was selected for a 16-member possible training camp. Kamal made it to the finals of the National Championship in 2002 and although he was defeated in the final, he was despite this included in the national team.
Sharat Kamal won his first national title in 2003
- Apart from this, he won the first international medal in the 2004 Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships.
- Qualified for 2004 Athens Olympics.
Sharat Kamal started playing table tennis at the age of 4.
Kamal has won 11 gold medals so far in Commonwealth Games
- 2006 Melbourne – Gold Medal in men’s singles.
- 2010 Delhi – Gold Medal in men’s team.
- 2018 Gold Coast- Gold medal in men’s team, gold medal in men’s doubles (with G. Sathiyan) and bronze medal in men’s singles.
- 2022 Birmingham – Gold medal in men’s team, gold medal in men’s singles, gold medal in mixed doubles (with Sreeja Akula) and silver medal in men’s doubles (with G. Sathiyan).
Kamal has won bronze medal in Asian Games
- 2018 Jakarta – Bronze medal in men’s team.
- 2023 Hangzhou – Bronze medal in the men’s couple (with G. Sathiyan).
Kamal arrived in world top 30 for the first time in 2020
- Won gold medals at the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships in 2004 and 2009.
- Won the title at the US Open in 2007.
- Won the title at Egypt Open in 2010.
- Won the bronze medal at the Spain Open in 2011.
- In 2015 performed brilliantly at the Swedish Open.
- In 2020, the World Top 30 arrived for the first time.
Kamal reached the third round at Tokyo Olympics
- Represented India at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
- Qualified at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but could not win the medal.
- The 2016 was out in the first round at the Rio Olympics.
- 2020 Tokyo Olympics – reached the third round.
Kamal has been a 10 -time national champion
Achanta Sharat Kamal 10 -time National Champion (2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2015, 2022). He is considered to be India’s most successful table tennis player.
First Indian to receive Khel Ratna Award in Table Tennis

- Major Dhyanchand Khel Ratna Award in 2022 (first Indian to receive the award in table tennis).
