On December 19, Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Calcutta has released the result of Common Admission Test i.e. CAT 2024. Through the score, admission will be available in IIMs and 86 non-IIM institutes.

However, leading management institutes like IIM do not give admission on the basis of CAT score alone. Apart from CAT score, written exam and interview are also required. Apart from these, all IIMs have some criteria, on the basis of which the candidates who pass CAT get selection.

CAT score primary screening tool, weightage given to other parameters also

On the basis of CAT score, IIMs shortlist the candidates for written test and personal interview. However, academic records, experience and other factors are also considered in this screening. The admission criteria of all IIM institutes are different but overall for admission in IIM, candidates have to maintain a holistic profile.

The old IIMs and the new i.e. ‘baby IIMs’ screen the candidates differently considering all the factors –

CAT Score:

CAT score is the most important criterion for admission in all IIMs. Through this computer-based exam, candidates’ abilities like quantitative ability, verbal ability, reading comprehension, data interpretation and logical reasoning are assessed. Older IIMs generally have a cut-off of CAT score of 99 percentile or higher in the general category. Whereas the cut-off of Baby IIM ranges from 85 to 94. Meaning, in this case taking admission in the new IIM can be said to be somewhat easy.

Academic Performance:

IIMs shortlist the candidates for written test and interview on the basis of marks obtained in 10th to 12th and then graduation. Better academic performance is also necessary for admission in the new IIM.

Institutes like IIM Bangalore give different weightage to each level of academic qualification. Preference is given to such candidates who have an excellent overall academic record.

Diversity Factor:

Institutes like IIM also give bonus points to candidates on the basis of many factors like gender diversity. Especially the old IIMs give extra points to female and non-binary candidates. Apart from this, educational background is also considered. Some extra points are also given to candidates coming from non-engineering background.

Work Experience:

Professional experience also matters for admission in old IIMs. Candidates with 1 to 3 years of experience in management or related sectors are given preference in admission. However, in the new IIMs, work experience is given less priority than the old IIMs.

Written Test and Personal Interview:

Candidates shortlisted on the basis of CAT score appear for the written test of the old IIM institutes and the simultaneous written test and interview of the new IIMs. In old IIM institutes, this test and interview is given more weightage than in new IIMs. This can have a big impact in the final selection.

However, there may be some differences in the criteria for admission in different IIMs. For this, candidates should visit the official website of IIM institutes.
