Pakistan defeated India by 180 runs in the final of Champions Trophy 2017.

India will not play its matches in Pakistan in the Champions Trophy 2025. That means all the matches of the team will be played at neutral venues. According to the agreement reached in the ICC meeting, the Pakistani team will also play its matches at neutral venues in all the tournaments to be held in India from 2024 to 2027.

With this agreement, the Pakistani team will play all its matches in the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup to be held in India and the 2026 T20 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka on neutral venues.

Earlier, when ICC had told Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) about holding Champions Trophy 2025 in hybrid model. Then PCB had put some conditions before ICC. In which Pakistan had said that they would prefer to play all their tournament matches in India at some other place instead of India. Which has now been accepted by ICC.

All 15 members agree to hybrid model A meeting of all the board members was held on December 5 in the presence of ICC’s new chairman Jai Shah. Shah had also reached the headquarters in Dubai this month. In the meeting, all 15 board members agreed to the hybrid model. Pakistan also did not oppose the decision in the meeting.

5 out of 15 matches will be held in UAE The tournament of 15 matches between 8 teams is to start from 19 February and continue till 9 March. India will play all three of its group stage matches in UAE. A semi-final and final will also be played here. Whereas the remaining 10 matches of the tournament will be held in Pakistan. PCB put forward 4-5 demands in the meeting, but ICC rejected most of the demands.

PCB’s demands

  • PCB demands tri-series with India PCB demanded a tri-series with India at a neutral venue in the future, but both BCCI and ICC did not agree to it. There has been no series between India and Pakistan since 2012, both the teams have faced each other only in ICC and ACC tournaments.
  • If there is any tournament in India then its matches should also be on neutral venues. ICC has accepted this demand of Pakistan. Now if there is any tournament in India then the matches of Pakistani team will also be played at neutral venues. However, BCCI had earlier said that there is no problem regarding security in India, hence Pakistan’s matches should not be played at neutral venues. 5 matches of Champions Trophy were snatched from Pakistan, PCB also asked for compensation for this, ICC accepted this demand.
  • Pakistan does not want to be in India’s group PCB also demanded that if India wants to play at a neutral venue, then Pakistan should be removed from its group. So that Pakistan should play all its group matches on home ground only, but ICC and BCCI along with broadcasters also opposed this demand, because India-Pakistan match in any tournament is like a blockbuster event. Both the teams can face each other in the Champions Trophy on March 1 in Dubai.
  • Financial year revenue should be increased PCB wants its financial year revenue to be increased by 5.75 percent. Also, till 2031, all major events to be held in India should be in hybrid model only.

Why was the decision delayed? Initially India had refused to send its team to Pakistan for this tournament. At first Pakistan remained adamant that India would have to come to Pakistan, but after India’s tough stance, the Pakistan Cricket Board has finally agreed to the hybrid model.

Ever since Pakistan got the opportunity to host the Champions Trophy, there were speculations that the Indian team might refuse to go to Pakistan. India had earlier refused to go to Pakistan to play the Asia Cup in 2023. Then India’s matches in the Asia Cup were held in Sri Lanka.

After this, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had first proposed to hold all the Indian matches in Lahore and send the players to India after the match. When India did not accept this, PCB also refused for the hybrid model.

The last international match between India and Pakistan was in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Then India won by 6 runs.
