SCHEME
1. PM Modi launches ‘Bima Sakhi Yojana’: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched ‘Bima Sakhi Yojana’ in Panipat, Haryana on 9 December. This scheme has been specially designed keeping in mind the rural women so that they can be economically empowered. Under this scheme, women will get a chance to work as insurance agents with Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).
This scheme will provide monthly stipend and commission-based incentives to women for three years, which will help them achieve economic independence.
- Women applying for Bima Sakhi Yojana should be between 18 to 70 years of age and should have at least 10th pass.
- However, relatives of LIC agents or employees, such as spouse, children, parents, siblings or in-laws, cannot apply for this scheme.
- Moreover, former employees or former agents of LIC will also not be eligible for this scheme.
- Under the scheme, women will be given monthly stipend for three years.
- You will get a stipend of Rs 7,000 per month for the first year. A stipend of Rs 6,000 per month will be available in the second year, but the condition for this is that at least 65% of the policies completed in the first year remain active at the end of every month of the second year.
- A stipend of Rs 5,000 per month will be given in the third year, but for this it is necessary that at least 65% of the policies completed in the second year remain active at the end of every month of the third year.
- That means, to get the stipend every year, it will be mandatory for women to keep their policies active.
- Women will have to submit some important documents during the application process. These include passport size photo, age proof, address proof and 10th class mark sheet.
- Interested women can apply online by visiting the official website of LIC. For this, ‘Click Here For Bima Sakhi’ link has been given on the website, by clicking on which the form can be filled.
SUMMIT
2. PM Modi inaugurates ‘Rising Rajasthan Global Investment Summit 2024’ in Jaipur: Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the ‘Rising Rajasthan Global Investment Summit 2024’ in Jaipur today, 9 December. This summit will last for 3 days and representatives from 32 countries are participating in it. Pravasi Rajasthani Conclave will be held on the second day of the program, while MSME Conclave will be hosted on the last day.
Rising Rajasthan Global Investment Summit 2024 is being organized at Jaipur Exhibition and Convention Center (JECC) located in Sitapura.
- Apart from this, Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated Rajasthan Global Business Expo.
- Even before the summit, Rajasthan government has signed MOUs worth Rs 35 lakh crore with various companies.
- Representatives of 32 countries are participating in this summit, out of which 17 are partner countries. These include Denmark, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Switzerland, Malaysia, Spain, Cuba, Venezuela, Morocco, Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Nepal, Oman, Poland and Thailand.
- Other countries participating in this investment summit include US, UK, Germany, Australia, Indonesia, Egypt, Finland, Russia, Seychelles, Chad, Ecuador, Ghana, Iraq, Madagascar, Paraguay and Zimbabwe.
- During this three-day summit, country sessions and roundtables are also being organized for a total of 8 countries.
- The summit included thematic sessions across 12 sectors.
- Many experts from the country and the world, people from the industry and business world, officials from the Central and Rajasthan governments will participate in these sessions and during this the major challenges, technological changes and emerging opportunities related to the related subject will be discussed.
- The 12 theme based sessions include Women Entrepreneurship, Manufacturing, Water Management and Sustainability, Sustainable Energy, Healthcare, Sustainable Mining, Startups, Education, Sustainable Finance, Agri-Business, Tourism and Infrastructure and Supply Chain.
- A major attraction of the ‘Rising Rajasthan’ Global Investment Summit is also the Rajasthan Global Business Expo featuring Rajasthan Pavilion, Country Pavilion, Startup Pavilion and exhibitions by leading Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs) and companies.
INAUGURATION
3. Union Minister of State Jitin Prasad launches India Internet Governance Forum: Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasad launched the fourth edition of India Internet Governance Forum (IIGF) in New Delhi on December 9. This program will continue for two days.
IIGF 2024 is being held on December 9-10, 2024 at Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
- The theme of IIGF is “Innovating Internet Governance for India”.
- IIGF has been launched on the lines of the United Nations Internet Governance Forum (UN IGF).
- It is a global multi-stakeholder platform promoting dialogue on Internet-related policies.
- It was established in 2021.
- The last 3 editions of IIGF (2021, 2022 and 2023) were held in hybrid mode.
- IIGF aims to address the challenges and risks associated with the Internet.

4. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri reached Dhaka on Bangladesh tour: India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri reached Dhaka today i.e. on 9 December amid attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. He was welcomed by Ishrat Jahan, Director General (South Asia) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh. As Foreign Secretary, this is Misri’s first visit to Bangladesh.
During the one-day visit, Misri met his Bangladeshi counterpart Mohammad Jasim Uddin.
- This is also the first high-level meeting between the two countries in Dhaka after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government in August 2024.
- After the official talks, Misri will also meet Mohammad Tauheed Hossain, advisor on foreign affairs in the interim government of Bangladesh, and Mohammad Yunus, chief advisor.
- The Egyptians will return to New Delhi on Monday night itself.
- Vikram Misri may raise the issue of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh during his Bangladesh tour.
- Along with this, many bilateral issues will also be discussed between the two countries.
- Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri was given a two-year extension by the Central Government.
- He was to retire on November 30, 2024. But the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the extension of Misri’s service.
- He will now continue in the role of Foreign Secretary till July 14, 2026 or until further orders.

5. Bangladesh won the second consecutive Under-19 Asia Cup: Bangladesh has won the Men’s Under-19 Asia Cup title for the second consecutive time. The team defeated India by 59 runs in the final played in Dubai on 8 December. The Indian team missed out on winning the Asia Cup trophy for the 9th time.
Playing first, Bangladesh scored 198 runs, in reply Team India could score only 139 runs.
- Bangladesh’s Iqbal Hossain Emon and captain Azizul Hakim took 3 wickets each. Al Fahad got 2 wickets. While batting for the team, Rizan Hussain scored 47 runs and Shihab James scored 40 runs.
- Captain Aman scored the most runs for India. He played an innings of 26 runs in 65 balls with 1 four.
- The Under-19 Asia Cup was established by the Asian Cricket Council in 1989.
- There have been a total of 11 editions of this tournament so far, out of which India has won 8 tournaments.
- India has reached the finals only on two occasions i.e. in 2017 and 2023.
- Bangladesh won its first title by defeating United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the final match held in Dubai last year.

6. Devjit Saikia became the interim secretary of BCCI: On December 7, BCCI Joint Secretary Devjit Saikia has been made the interim secretary of the board. He will replace Jay Shah, who took over as ICC chairman on December 1. Saikia is a lawyer and has played domestic cricket for Assam.
ICC meeting was held in Dubai this week, in which Saikia represented BCCI. The meeting was led by Chairman Jai Shah.
- Saikia has not become the permanent secretary. Elections are yet to be held for this post, however, Saikia may continue in the post till September.
- Devjit is a resident of Guwahati, Assam, he was born in 1969.
- In 1984, he got a chance to play for the Assam team in the CK Nayudu Trophy.
- Till 1989, he was also a part of Assam Under-19 team.
- He also played with Sourav Ganguly in the East Zone team.
- In 1991, he made his Ranji Trophy debut for Assam as a wicketkeeper.
- At the age of 21, Devjit left professional cricket and focused on academics. After completing his master’s degree in Economics, he took a law degree and became a lawyer.
- Saikia has also led India in the Lawyers’ Cricket World Cup.
- Saikia became a part of Guwahati Sports Academy in 2003.
- Until 2018, he took part in the administration of different sports industries.
- In 2019, he became the Joint Secretary of BCCI, during which Sourav Ganguly was the Chairman of the Board. Saikia has been a part of BCCI since then.

History of 9 December: On this day in 1946, former Congress President and Rajya Sabha MP Sonia Gandhi was born in Louisiana, Italy. Sonia’s real name was Antonia Maino. After completing her primary education, Sonia reached Cambridge, UK for higher education. Here she met Rajiv Gandhi in 1965 and both of them got married in 1968. Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in Tamil Nadu in 1991. Six years after Rajiv’s assassination, Sonia took over the reins of Congress in 1997 and became the president. She was elected Lok Sabha MP from Amethi for the first time in 1999. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Congress could win only one seat of Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh, from where Sonia Gandhi had contested.
Sonia Gandhi decided to leave Rae Bareli and go to Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
