1. India will chair the 68th session of the Narcotic Drugs Commission: India has been elected to chair the 68th session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND). The Indian Embassy in Austria gave this information on 6 December. Additionally, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Shambhu Kumaran took over as Chairman of the Commission.
This is the first time that India has been nominated for the presidency of this important body of the United Nations.
- The Narcotic Drugs Commission is the principal policy-making body of the United Nations on drug-related matters.
- Its job is to monitor global drug trends and support countries in making policies for it.
- In addition, CND organizes major international drug trends conferences.
- CND is one of the commissions of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
- It is a governing body of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
- The Narcotic Drugs Commission is headquartered in Vienna, the capital of Austria.
- In June 2024, the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) released the World Drug Report 2024. It was reported that the number of drug users worldwide is expected to reach 292 million by 2022, which shows an increase of 20% compared to the previous decade.
- Cannabis is the most popular drug with 228 million users, followed by opioids, amphetamines, cocaine and ecstasy.
- Of the 64 million people suffering from substance use disorders, only one in 11 receive treatment.
- At the same time, only one in 18 women suffering from drug use related diseases gets treatment, while only one in seven men gets treatment.
- Apart from this, according to the data of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), at present around 10 crore people in the country are addicted to various intoxicants.
- According to the Home Ministry, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Punjab are the top three states with the highest number of FIRs registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act) in the three years between 2019 and 2021.

2. 85 Central and 28 Navodaya Vidyalayas will be opened in the country: The Union Cabinet met in Delhi on 6 December. During this period, 85 Kendriya Vidyalayas (KV), 28 Navodaya Vidyalayas (NV) and Phase 4 of Delhi Metro have been approved. Rithala-Kundli corridor will be constructed in the fourth phase.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said- 85 new Kendriya Vidyalayas and 28 Navodaya Vidyalayas will be built in the country. Navodaya Vidyalayas will be built in those districts which were not yet included in the Navodaya Vidyalaya Scheme.
- A budget of Rs 8232 crore has been kept to build these schools. It is Rs 5,872 crore for KV and Rs 2,360 crore for NV.
- 82 thousand 560 students will benefit from the new KV, 15 thousand 680 students will benefit from the NV and 6,700 jobs will be generated through these schools.
- There will be 5,388 regular openings in KV and 1,316 openings in NV.
- All Kendriya Vidyalayas (KV) and Navodaya Vidyalayas have been designed as PM Shri Schools.
- With the aim of implementing the new education policy, the Central Government had brought the Prime Minister’s School for Rising India (PM Shri School Scheme) in the year 2022.
- Under PM Shri School Scheme, 14500 primary, secondary and higher secondary schools of the country are to be developed as model schools.
- These schools are to be equipped with facilities like latest technology, smart classes, modern infrastructure.
- Rithala-Kundli corridor of Delhi Metro has been approved in the cabinet meeting. It is 26 kilometers long and will connect Delhi to Haryana.
- There will be 21 stations in this corridor, all of which will be elevated.
- This project is to be completed in 4 years. Once it is ready, Delhi Metro will become one of the three largest metro networks in the world. The cost of the project is Rs 6230 crore.
- This line will also connect to Shaheed Sthal (New Bus Stand)-Rithala (Red Line) corridor.
- This will increase connectivity in parts of north-western parts of Delhi like Narela, Bawana and Rohini.
3. India’s first Hyperloop test track ready: India’s first Hyperloop testing track is ready. This track is built in the campus of IIT-Madras and its length is 410 meters. Hyperloop is a high-speed train that runs in a vacuum within a tube.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav gave this information by tweeting on social media platform on 6 December.
- This track is a joint project of Indian Railways, Aavishkaar Hyperloop team of IIT-Madras and startup Tutor Hyperloop.
- The train can run at a speed of 100 km/hour on this test track.
- Now Hyperloop will be tested on a long track at a speed of 600 km/hour.
- Earlier, the Maharashtra government had approved the Mumbai-Pune Hyperloop project.
- The idea of Hyperloop was first given by Elon Musk in 2012.
- 76 students are working in this project of IIT-Madras. This project will be prepared in 2 phases.
- The first phase will involve construction of 11.5 km of track. After completion of necessary tests, the second phase will be launched to cover the remaining track of approximately 100 km.

4. President laid the foundation stone of 3 new railway projects: President Draupadi Murmu on December 7 laid the foundation stone of three new railway projects for Odisha. This includes Bangariposhi-Gorumhishani, Budhamra-Chakulia, Badampahar-Kendujhar railway projects. A budget of Rs 6,200 crore has been allocated for this.
President Draupadi Murmu is on a five-day visit to Odisha.
- The 82 km long Badampahar-Kendujhargarh new railway line will connect Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts of Odisha. This line will be constructed at a cost of Rs 2,106 crore.
- The length of Bangriposi-Gorumhisani new railway line is 86 kilometers. This rail project will cover Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. The construction of this line is likely to cost Rs 2,549 crore.
- The third rail project is Buramara-Chakulia, covering Mayurbhanj district of Odisha and East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand. Rs 1,639 crore will be spent on building this new 60 kilometer railway line.
- With this, the President laid the foundation stone for the Tribal Research Center at Rairangpur, upgradation of Rairangpur Dandabose Airport and construction of a new building at Rairangpur Sub-Divisional Level Hospital in virtual mode from here.
- A provision of Rs 10,500 crore was made in the railway budget of the state.
- Out of this, the President has laid the foundation stone of these three railway lines which are going to be constructed at a cost of Rs 6,200 crore.

5. The fourth Mekong-Ganga Dhamma Yatra reached Delhi: The fourth Mekong-Ganga Dhamma Yatra reached Delhi on 6 December. This journey started from Thailand on 2 December. It includes Buddhist academicians, former bureaucrats and enlightened citizens. This yatra will run from 2nd December to 10th December. It is led by Dr. Supachai Wirapuchong, Secretary General of the Bodh Gaya Institute.
Mekong River passes through 6 countries of Asia and about 100 million people depend on it. It has importance like river Ganga.
- This journey, which started from Thailand, has reached India via the member countries of the International Buddhist Confederation.
- The theme of the Yatra this year is ‘From the Mekong River Basin to the Great Ganges’, highlighting the cultural and spiritual connections between Southeast Asia and India.
- The trip will cover major Buddhist sites like Patna, Bodh Gaya, New Delhi and Gujarat.
- Its purpose is to promote peace, environmental awareness and conflict avoidance through the teachings of Buddha.
- Mekong River is one of the major rivers of the world. It starts from Tibet and flows through China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia.
- It is the 13th longest river in the world in terms of length and the 10th in terms of volume rate of flow.

History of 7th December: On this day in 1982, Charles Brooks Jr. became the first person to be sentenced to death by poisonous injection. In the US city of Texas, a cocktail of drugs was injected into Brooks’ body, which numbed his mind and body, paralyzed him and died due to heart failure.
Charles Brooks was sentenced to death after being found guilty of the murder of David Gregory, an auto mechanic. Along with Brooks, Woody Loudres was also sentenced to death in this case. Loudres’s sentence was later commuted, but Charles Brooks’s death sentence remained intact. Poisonous injection was considered more humane than hanging.
