1. Bhutan King arrived in India on a two-day visit: Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck arrived in India on December 5 on a two-day visit. He was also accompanied by Queen Jetsun Pema Wangchuk and senior officials. On reaching New Delhi, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar welcomed him.

  • About 50,000 Indian citizens are employed in many projects including construction, education in Bhutan. Some workers travel daily from India to Bhutan’s border towns for jobs.
  • In recent years, partnership between India and Bhutan has increased in areas like hydropower, digital infrastructure, education and space technology.
  • After Singapore, Bhutan is the second country to use BHIM UPI app.
  • MoUs have been signed to increase cooperation for supply of petroleum products and food security from India to Bhutan.
  • Both the countries have signed an MoU regarding power conservation.
  • India has allocated Rs 2068 crore to Bhutan in the year 2024-25 under its ‘Neighborhood First’ policy.

2. Justice Manmohan becomes Supreme Court judge: On December 5, Justice Manmohan became the judge of the Supreme Court. He was sworn in by CJI Sanjeev Khanna. Earlier he was the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court.

  • After Justice Manmohan takes oath, the number of judges in the Supreme Court has increased to 33. The total number of judges approved in the Supreme Court is 34.
  • The collegium had recommended the name of Justice Manmohan on November 28.
  • This was the first collegium meeting of Supreme Court Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna.
  • Apart from the Chief Justice, the collegium included Justice BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice AS Oka.
  • Justice Manmohan was appointed Additional Judge of Delhi High Court in March 2008 and promoted as Permanent Judge in December 2009.
  • He became the Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court on November 9, 2023 and was appointed Chief Justice on September 29, 2024.
  • There is a fixed process to select judges of the High Court and the Supreme Court, which is called the Supreme Court Collegium. The most senior judges of the Supreme Court are included in it.
  • The Center accepts its recommendations and appoints the new CJI and other judges.
  • According to tradition, the most senior judge on the basis of experience in the Supreme Court becomes the Chief Justice.
  • This process takes place under a memorandum, which is called MoP i.e. ‘Memorandum of Procedure for the Appointment of Supreme Court Judges’.
  • MoP was prepared for the first time in the year 1999.

3. Viacom18 got the domain of Jio-Hotstar: Viacom18 Media Private Limited, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, has now officially become the owner of jiohotstar.com domain. Viacom18 got this domain after the merger of telecom company Reliance Jio and Disney + Hotstar.

The jiohotstar.com domain was registered by a developer from Delhi. The developer had purchased this domain in 2023, during which talks for the merger of Jio Cinema-Hotstar had started.

  • Last month, the merger of Disney Star India and Viacom18 took place, which also includes Disney Hotstar and Jio Cinema.
  • After this merger, it has become the largest entertainment network in the country.
  • Disney-Reliance Entertainment now has a total of 75 crore viewers with 2 over the top i.e. OTT platforms and 120 channels.
  • The merger deal has been done for Rs 70,352 crore.
  • Now Reliance has 63.16% stake and Disney has 36.84% stake in the company.
  • The chairperson of this new company is Nita Ambani.
  • The Vice Chairperson is Uday Shankar, who will provide strategic guidance to the company.
  • This joint venture will be led by three CEOs and all three will handle the responsibilities of different verticals.
  • Kevin Vaz will head the entertainment organization. Kiran Mani will take charge of the digital organization. Whereas, Sanjog Gupta will lead the sports organization.
  • Reliance is one of the largest private sector companies in India and its market cap is more than Rs 17 lakh crore.
  • Reliance currently operates in petroleum refining and marketing, petrochemicals, renewable energy (solar and hydrogen), digital services and retail sectors.

4. Delhi Assembly Speaker announced his retirement from politics: Delhi Assembly Speaker and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Ram Niwas Goyal announced his retirement from politics on December 5. 76-year-old Goyal is an MLA from Shahdara assembly seat of Delhi.

5. Turner Prize for Scottish artist Jasleen: This time, Glasgow-born Indian-origin artist Jasleen Kaur has received Britain’s prestigious Turner Prize. He received an award of Rs 26.84 lakh for his exhibition ‘Alter Alter’ at a function on 4 December.

6. ‘Proba-3’ mission successfully launched: The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) today, December 5, successfully launched the European Space Agency (ESA)’s ‘Proba-3’. Proba-3 is the world’s first precision formation flying satellite. That means, not one but two satellites will be launched here, whose total weight will be 550 kg. Proba-3 (Project for Onboard Anatomy) has two satellites – Coronagraph (310 kg) and Occulter (240 kg).

Proba-3 was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

  • Proba-3 was launched with the help of ISRO’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, PSLV-C59. In this, C59 is actually rocket code.

  • This rocket is 145.99 feet high and the weight of this four-stage rocket was 320 tons at the time of launch.
  • In this mission, two spacecraft flew together, they will study the corona, the outer atmosphere of the Sun.
  • Proba-3 will not only provide new information about the Sun, but will also pave the way for future advancements in space technology.
  • PSLV was chosen because of its accuracy and cheapness.
  • ESA Proba-3 mission has been launched in collaboration with NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the commercial arm of ISRO.
  • ISRO has already launched 2 Proba missions and both the missions were successful.
