NATIONAL

1. Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 introduced in Lok Sabha: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha on December 3. This bill also got approval. Under this bill, there is a proposal to increase the nominee in the bank account.

  • Under the existing rules, only one person was allowed to be a nominee for deposits in a bank account or goods kept in a locker, but now people will have the option to add 4 nominees to their bank account.
  • Depositors will now also have the facility of sequential nomination, that is, they will be able to add nominees one after the other at different times.
  • In this new bill, 19 amendments are also proposed in 5 existing laws for multi-state cooperative societies providing banking services and bank auditing etc.
  • The 5 existing laws in which changes are being made are – Reserve Bank of India Act-1934, Banking Regulation Act-1949, State Bank of India Act-1955, Banking Companies (Acquisition and Transfer of Undertakings) Act-1970 and Banking Companies ( Acquisition and Transfer of Undertakings) Act, 1980.

Chandigarh became the first state in India to fully implement three criminal laws: On November 3, Chandigarh became the first union territory in the country to fully implement the three new criminal laws. All three laws – Indian Civil Code (BNS), Indian Civil Code (BNSS) and Indian Evidence Act (BSA) will be fully implemented across the country within 3 years.

  • These were approved by President Draupadi Murmu on 25 December.
  • The laws were implemented across the country from July 1, 2024.
  • In this way, the Indian Penal Code (IPC) made in 1860 has now been replaced by the Indian Judicial Code (BNS) 2023.
  • In the BNS Act, 22 provisions of IPC have been repealed and 175 have been changed. Along with this, 8 new sections have been added to the law.
  • There are a total of 356 sections in the Indian Judicial Code, 2023.
  • At the same time, Indian Civil Defense Code 2023 has now been implemented in place of CrPC made in 1898.
  • Through the Indian Civil Defense Code, 9 provisions of CrPC were repealed, 160 provisions were changed and 9 new provisions were included.
  • The Indian Civil Defense Code now has a total of 533 sections.
  • Apart from this, the Indian Evidence Code of 1872 has been replaced by the Indian Evidence Code 2023.
  • Indian Evidence Act 2023 i.e. 5 provisions of the existing Indian Evidence Code have been repealed. Along with changes in 23 provisions, a new provision has also been included.
  • Now there are a total of 170 sections in the law.

3. Devendra Fadnavis will be the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra: Devendra Fadnavis will be the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra.   • The collegium had recommended the name of Justice Manmohan on November 28.
  • This was the first collegium meeting of Supreme Court Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna.
  • Apart from the Chief Justice, the collegium included Justice BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice AS Oka.
  • Justice Manmohan was born on December 17, 1962 in Delhi.
  • He is the son of Jagmohan Malhotra, former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir and former Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
  • Justice Manmohan has done BA (Hons) in History from Hindu College.
  • He did LLB from Law Centre, Delhi University in 1987.
  • He started his career by practicing law in the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court. During this period, he advocated in civil, criminal, constitution, taxation, trademark and service cases.
  • This includes high profile cases like Dabhol Power Company, Hyderabad Nizam Jewelery Trust, Claridges Hotel controversy, Modi family, Gujarat Ambuja Cement sales tax case and Fatehpur Sikri encroachment.
  • Justice Manmohan was appointed Additional Judge of Delhi High Court in March 2008 and promoted as Permanent Judge in December 2009.
  • He became the Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court on November 9, 2023 and was appointed Chief Justice on September 29, 2024.
  • There is a fixed process for selecting judges of the High Court and the Supreme Court, which is called the Supreme Court Collegium. The most senior judges of the Supreme Court are included in it.
  • The Center accepts its recommendations and appoints the new CJI and other judges.

7. Famous squash player Raj Manchanda passed away: On December 3, famous squash player Raj Manchanda passed away in New Delhi. He was 79 years old. He was a 6-time national champion. He won his first title at the age of 33.

One of the most popular faces of Indian squash, Manchanda was the national champion from 1977 to 1982 and won 11 titles for Army.

8. Brand value of IPL reaches Rs 1 lakh crore: The total brand value of the world’s most popular T-20 cricket league IPL has increased by 13% to 12 billion dollars i.e. Rs 1.01 lakh crore.
